We are going to try our first beach camping experience in 2 weeks. Has anyone ever been to Dockweiler? If you know anything about this place let me know. Other than it is right by LAX so I realize there will be some noise, but just like Mojave Narrows with the constant trains, we will get used to it I'm sure. I like that we can have a fire out on the beach though.
Here's a link to a bunch of pics:  http://www.californiacoastline.org/cgi-bin/image.cgi?image=8310&mode=sequential&flags=0&year=2002.  We will have a full report on the place with our own pics when we get back.

WOW!! You're brave :eyecrazy:

That CG is right off the end of the main runway. I would think that you would have constant jet noise 24 hrs a day.

It'll be interesting to "hear" how you do there.

That's about 20 minutes from where I live. Maybe we'll come down & pay you a visit Saturday afternoon :D . Let us know what space you're in.

TheViking

I'm thinking it may be loud as well but, like I said, Mojave Narrows has the trains, and alot (Not All) of the CG's along the coast are right on PCH and the RR tracks. Dockweiler is a popular CG since they remodeled it and have Full hook-up's. The only reason I even got a site on such short notice was I had to pull out the Handicap card. This will be our first actual "Beach" campout.

That would cool if you stopped by Wayne, problem is that they don't give site numbers prior to arrival. So, we will be there Thursday 5/18-Sunday 5/21,
take a good look at my webshots pics with my truck and trailer and go by that. We will be in the 1st or 2nd row and I usually have a Pirate flag flying about 20 above my TT, you can't miss us.

We have driven through, it is 5 min away from my Mom's house, seems pretty close like typical beach camping.  No parking and people were waiting in line just to park.  I suppose it wss visitors.  Last year they had some big waves so a huge sand barrior was built. So it blocks ocean view...and have to walk up a big sand hill to access beach...I am afraid the air port noise will be bad.   Please post how you liked it.  It would be convenient to stay there when visiting mom,.

I'm extremely familiar with that camp,,....er..parking lot.  During the week I'm about five minutes from there.  I work in Westchester, and I occasionally eat my lunch while watching the waves at the parking lot right up the road from the RVPark.

Hmm?  How do I describe Dockweiler?  I have already hinted at the parking lot similarity.  Aside from the jets taking off over the Pacific towards Hawaii or Asia, the beach is very quiet, especially during the week.  It's not close to anything other than the Hyperion water treatment plant across the street.

There is a nice bike path!  And there are vollyball nets!  Being that the water treatment plant for the city of LosAngeles is across the street, I can't imagine the water quality is good for swimming, but I'm sure the ranger can provide more details.

all I have to say about it is...Don't go in the water :eyecrazy:

Well, for me, there are jellyfish, sharks, and who knows what else in the water so therefore it is Not a good water quality for me to swim anyway.  It does have the parking thing going on but given a choice between that and some of the CG's like Rincon in Ventura, where you camp on the shoulder of PCH, or where you camp along the PCH and RR tracks,  It should be interesting.  I'm anxious to see if the planes are as annoying as the trains at Mojave.

I've done some research and alot of the beaches have had closures last year due to contamination.  According to the EPA website Dockweiler was closed 12 times in 2005 for a total of 70 days,  Santa Monica State Beach was closed 28 times for a total of 211 days, Doheny SB was closed only 6 times but for a total of 105 days, Rufugio SB even had 6 days for a total of 40 days.  I think it's unfair to pick on one beach when they pretty much all suck.
Here is the website so you can look up your favorite beach and see how much crap is floating in it.  http://oaspub.epa.gov/beacon/beacon_national_page.main

griffsdad

That's a very interesting camp site.

BootheBunch

I grew up right there....Manhattan Beach.  Around there was one of the "Inspiration Points".  Not that I know anything about places like that!!  ;)

Anyway, yes, it is a parking lot...but, the beach is awesome, so is the Strand for biking and skating.  I LOVE it down in that area.  In fact, I had planned to make reservations there...and let you all know when I did (cooler than inland, obviously).

I wish we weren't going to Campland that weekend.   I haven't ever camped there---since growing up there, and my family is still all there---but, decided to do it this summer since we haven't been able to camp much lately....and was going through my campbook, and noted that one for summer.  Heck, my mom told me to drop the girls off with her for the night....and Bran and I could have the evening together in the trailer.  Of course, me being the camper I am....I responded that she could could stay in the trailer with the girls, and WE would stay at her house!!!

Anyway, have fun!  Let me know how you like it....'cos we'll be camping there in June/July.

OK.... I just talked to my wife. We'll be down Saturday afternoon.

The grandkids are in a Church play that evening so we won't be able to stay long. Please let us know if you decide not to stay. PM me and I will give you my ph #.
