We would like to go to either Maine or Cape Cod in late July / early August. Does anybody have any recommendations on good campgrounds? We greatly appreciate any insight. :)

Adventure Bound Campground in North Truro,Ma.  near P-Town, very nice and friendly.  Have stayed there a few times and will be there Week of June 18th.  Bus takes you right into P-town which is a nice friendly place.  Alot of whale whatch tours there etc.... shops, rest., the ocean !!!!! for $1.00 the bus takes you from the campground right into town, a great deal.  J-Bird :D

Blackwoods Campground in Acadia NP, Maine.:)

I second Blackwoods at Acadia.  Camping there 14 years ago in a tent is what convinced us to buy a PUP.  It rained the entire time, and we had a 10 month old baby.  Yuck.  But the campground was great!  And Acadia is awesome.

If you are going to Freeport and LLBean there is Recompense Shores about 8 miles outside of town.

It would be dry camping and pit toilets.  Showers are okay but not the greatest.

They have some nice sites right along the bay and some great sunsets.

There is anotherl one near Freeport, not sure of the name, somethng like Sands of Maine.  Friend just booked there and it seemed on the pricey side.

Just keep in mind that either of your destinations will result in a lot of traffic and some slow going so give yourself plenty of time.  A llot of two lane tourist attaction traffic.

Blackwoods in Acadia, have to agree.  Great Place going there in August.
If you plan on going there, I would suggest that you make reservations now.  They fill up fast.

there is also Flying Point on the water, not far from Recompense, and the other one you were thinking of was Desert of Maine.  My parents visited there years ago, and thought it very pricey for what you get.  Come up the coast further and you have Thomas Point on the ocean, and White's Beach, both in Brunswick.  Then further up in Bath area there is Hermit Island or Popham Beach area.
Have fun!

Thanks for all of your input! :D  We will definitely look into those suggestions. And thanks for reminding us to budget "traffic time".

Hello
The past two trips we've made up the east coast to Cape Cod we have camped at the Sepewissett Campground.  My spelling is probably off  a bit.  We stay there because it is convenient to visiting the mother n law in the JDL nursing home.  It is also convenient to the Falmouth area, for shopping, catching the ferries to the islands and also near Woods Hole.  It is about 2 miles form the center of Falmouth, just a short ways off 28.  Long time family ownership with friendly people.  No pets from memorial to labor day.  Variety of sites, some seasonal trailers toward the back.  We like the sites in the back along the fence.

Do a google search and you should be able to find it.

Late July or early August is a terrible time to go to Cape Cod unless you like crowds and traffic.  19 years ago, in late July, I swore I'd never go camping on Cape Cod again (very long story).  I've kept the vow.  I've been to Harwich a few times to visit my sister, but I've not camped there.

On the other hand, I've been camping in Maine at least a half dozen times since then.  I'd stay at Blackwoods campground in a heartbeat.  I'd also suggest (if you are into canoeing) Woodland Acres.  We were there in May, so I don't know how the river looks in late July or August, but it was a great ride in May!  You can rent canoes from them, and they give you a ride to the dropoff point then you just canoe downstream to the campground.

In Cape Cod, we stayed at Nickerson State Park about 8 or so years ago and had a great time.  I was looking at going there again this year, but the park was decimated by a nasty winter storm.  They were closed for quite awhile, as they had to deal with hundreds of downed trees.  The park is open now, but I'm not sure what condition it's in.  Maybe someone on the board can post an update.

In Maine, we stayed at a small private campground outside of Acadia.  Unfortunately, neither I or my DW can remember the name of the park!!!.  A few internet searches have failed to jog my memory - sorry.  I do remember it was on the north side of Route 3, and that you could walk to the harbor from the campground.  My DW got some amazing sunrise photos.  We found the campground in a AAA book - which I can't find either.  grrrr.

I will say this - Cape Cod is nice, but Acadia will take your breath away.  I still have trouble adequately describing it.

Have fun.

[If you have kids you can't go wrong if you go to Acres of Wildlife in Steep Falls, ME. Stuff goes on all day every day for kids of all ages not just the little ones. They have a full time activity staff as well. You can only book weekend sites 1 month in advance as most sites are rented on a week long basis. This is a very clean campground with very friendly staff and a store that makes leaving the camp a thin of the past. Check this camp out at //www.acresofwildlife.com/ The wet hayrides and the mud bog are not to be missed by kids of any age! Have a great summer!!!

I think I might tend to agree with you on this one, Austin.  Especially if you are down in the Provincetown area.

We were not camping but stayed at a friend's time share in April.  Fantastic time to be there.  Weather is nice and the whales are just offshore and very very little traffic.  Plus the downtown stores are open and some of them are fun to shop through.  We have been there a few times in March or April and July or August.  We also have some friends that live in Provincetown that we have visited.

There is a campground, don't know the name, a mile or so from downtown Provincetown.  Looked fairly decent but may have a large number of seasonal sites.  Reservations might be hard to get at this late date.

Bar Harbor can be a bear in July/August but once you are on Mt. Dessert Island, you can still drive around or catch the free trolleys.
