Can I put it over the existing floor or will I have problems with the slide out sliding over it (being too high)? Should I completely remove the slide out then completely remove the old vinyl and reinstall? thanks for anyones help.

Can you tape a piece down or something flat of simillar thickness and test the clearance?

I do quite a bit of flooring in my day to day business, mostly tile and laminate but I do know if you are going to put new vinyl down over old I would take the old up first and scrape any residue up.  If you put "new Over old" you have no way of knowing how long it will last because you dont know what kind of adhesive was used for the original floor and what the breakdown is.  I did put down a laminate floor in a travel trailer for a friend over the existing vinyl.  Laminate floor is a floating floor so there is no adhesion.  This might not work for trailers that that have slide outs due to the clearance needed.  ( 1/8 - 1/4 inch)

just a thought....

A couple of points:

I put carpet in my former Coleman Niagara (with slide), semi-glued down on top of the vinyl.  All I did was remove the "faceplate" on the front of the slide, the part that slid over the carpet, unstaple the rubber gasket, and trim 1/4" off with my table saw.  Then, I restapled the rubber gasket on, and it now allowed the slide to go over the carpet.

On the Coleman, this was the only part that was affected by adding height to the floor.  There is a lot of "dead" space under the slide (dinette floor) -- the local dealer even installed stereos in there, putting a car stereo in that faceplate, with speakers.  The water pump is behind there as well.

As for installing on top... I had always thought it better to remove the old.  However, when we had our laundry vinyl replaced (at builder's expense), their flooring subcontractor put it on top, saying that pulling the old off could damage the wood underfloor (or something like that).  However, they did scrape a levelling compound on top of the old floor to make it totally smooth - ie, eliminate the "texture" of the first layer.
