Hi again,
I was wondering if anyone has been to Lake Rayston, I just found it listed as a really nice cg in a guide book but know nothing about it except it's on the largest lake in PA about 1/2 way between Pittsburgh and Harrisburg, it sounds like it might be really nice, what do you think??
Thanks

They cater to the local resisdents by allowing them to stop by during the week and sign a "sign-up sheet" for certain NON-RESERVABLE spots ,especially by the lake, for the weekend--when you call for reservations (I would also call for the NON-RESERVABLE SITES) and make them stick to them!! :
As you can tell I have witness this first hand  Non-reservable means to me "fist come first served" but who can compete with the natives , especially when you are driving 3 counties over and are told that the NON-RESERVABLE sites have been RESERVED for the weekend and there is no sign of a tent or camper on that NON-RESERVABLE site as you drive by to pick one out.

I live in PA - don't know anything about the campgrounds around the lake except for Trough Creek State Park on the southeast side of the lake.  This is an exceptional nice state park and campground, but it is not "on the lake".  Raystown Lake, unless you have a boat, has never impressed me as being really that exciting.  Not much to do at the lake or around the lake except fishing and boating - but you can do that in many other, and I think nicer places in PA.  But if you do go and don't mind "not being directly on the Water", try Trough Creek - they do have a nice trout stream running through it as well, if you do like to fish.  Sounds like you don't have much chance of getting the "on the water sites" at the other campgrounds anyway.

I have not camped at Raystown lake, but have heard that the campground is nice.  What is nice for one family may not be nice for another.  I have been told there is a lot of boat noise in the campground.

I had never heard of Trough Creek SP, so I looked it up.  Here is a link to that park.:)

We last stayed several times at Lake Raystown Lodge & Resort. The last time was 3 summers ago. We liked the campground. I would recommend going there with a boat or bringing someone along who has a boat. The Lodge is close to the southern end of the lake, which is about 15 -20 miles from the dam at the other end of the lake.

The sites were large and wooded. The bath houses were clean. Several shops/camp stores were within the campground. Also, the Lodge had a 'waterpark' which consisted of 4 or 5 slides and a pool (admission fee charged for the waterpark).

The last time we were there, sites were reserved either Sunday thru Thursday (nights) or Friday/Saturday. Sounds like they may have changed their reservation policy...last time we went there were no 'non-reservable' sites. Sites on the lake are tough to get for the Friday/Saturday time.

We enjoyed this campground--we haven't been back in three summers mainly because we have been going to new & different places.
