Hi there,

We have taken 3 close to home trips now and think we are ready for "the big one" we have the last week of august off and are looking for suggestions around southern IN and KY.  We've been to brown county numerous times and are looking for something different.  Any suggestions?

We have friends who got to Patoka Lake pretty often, http://www.in.gov/dnr/parklake/properties/res_patoka.html.

I was looking at it due to it's proximity to Wyandotte Caves (http://www.wyandottecaves.com/)  and Wyandotte Woods (now O'Bannon woods, http://www.in.gov/dnr/parklake/properties/park_obannonwoods.html).

Our kids, 5 and 2.5 are bit young to really appreciate it, I think, so we aren't planning one yet.

There are other caves in the area, I think and that would be different from Brown County, I think.

We were also thinking about Brown County, but again, the kid's ages and temperaments kind of preclude a hiking-oriented camping trip at this point, I think.

Keep in mind, that we bought our pup only this summer and have only gone to Brookville Lake twice so far and those were only weekenders! We're planning on a late Sept or early Oct trip to St. Louis so we'll see how the long haul goes.

Keep us posted on likely destinations as we love good ideas too.

We were thinking about looking into Patoka Lake I have heard it is really pretty there.  I'll have to check out those caves too.  We have gone to mammath Cave and loved it.  If you are ever in Northern Indiana, Pokagon SP is one of our favorite places to go.  We have been tent camping there for years and Love it now with our PU.  thank you for the suggestions We'll keep you posted on what we decide

Have to see what my friends have to say for Patoka - they've got a 5er, so it's not quite the same, but still.

Stayed once at the lodge/hotel at Pokagon.  Very nice place. Have some relatives with a house on Lake James, they threw parties for the family every year or so.  Seeing as we live SE of Indy, it made for a long drive and day, so we stayed there once.  Would easily consider a return with the pup.

Sorry this is kind of late after original post, however, Clifty Falls State Park is also a beautiful park to camp in. Lots of trails and places to see the falls. Also the town of Madison is right there, lots of nice shops and historical homes to go to. My husband is a mover and has a hard time staying put at a campsite so we got to explore quite a lot when we were there. There are also riverboat casinos near by and 2 times a year a little north of the park is National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association shoots in Friendship, IN. There is some good hiking there and also 2 flea markets that always take some of my money. Hope this helps.
