We are headed out to William heise on friday, and I am wondering if it is a good place for kids to ride bikes? My little one jusy got rid of the training wheels much to my dismay (he has no fear!) and I was just wondering if it is fairly flat or lots of hills? I am too afraid to take the bikes if he has hills to ride as he peddles like a mad man down hill.
Thanks

What section are you staying?  Around the carivan area, where the hookups are, they can ride around in a circle. It's pretty level.  The rest of the park has it's ups and downs but it you don't mind walking someplace for them to ride bikes, you should be fine.  however, the roads up into the campground are narrow and not very straight.  When we walk the campground, there's a fair amount of huffin' & puffin' with the inclines.  William Heise is our favorite place to camp and infact we are going the weekend of the 18th.  I can hardly wait.  We've cancled out on most of the trips this summer because of the weather.  Didn't want to stay in side because of the heat and then the threat of rain....didn't want to clean up after the rain.  So, we stayed home.  The 18th, we are going rain or shine.  have fun!  it's a beautiful park!!  Look for the turkeys.  You can hear them first thing in the morning if you are a early riser and most of the time can see them.  Also, lots of deer.  A good chance you will see deer too.  Bring bird seed.  The kids will get a kick feeding the birds.  We have the kids put small piles of seeds around the campsite.  Not too close because the squirels like the seed too..  Have a great time!

Thanks so much, that helps alot. If it is going to warm like I think we may forgo the bikes and do some hikes instead at a slower pace, I can't keep up with the little guy on his bike.. :J
I hope you have a great trip when you go, we were up by Yosemite during the Heat wave down here and we did not want to come home, but we had to and we had this trip planned to look forward to as well.

I'm not a huge hiker (mostly lazy and out of shape!) but we went on the shorter of the two trails there and it was awesome.  You feel like you go through all climates on the hike because for a while you're under a complete forest canopy, and then suddenly it seems like you're hiking in the desert.  It's not a difficult hike, but there are a few inclines and a few large steps that you'll need to keep an eye on your little guy.  Take your camera -- there's a beautiful view of the valley at one point nad we didn't have our camera!  Grrrr.

We love the Julian area.  It's been too long since we've gone there (since before the fire).  Have a great time and enjoy a piece of pie for me.  If you can get into Julian before the little cafe closes that sells buffalo burgers, you have to try one.   They're really, really good.  They're only open for breakfast and lunch, so you have to time it right.

We have been to this campground two times and this year our oldest was no longer on the training wheels.  I looked at the camp map and thought the roads around the various camp areas would be good for him to ride.

We soon found out there are hills..they even pooped me out.  You may have to wait till he's a bit bigger to ride in the park.

Thanks for all the suggestions. We had a wonderful time we left the bikes at home and the boys took scooters much easier for me to keep up after them.. ;)  I wanted to do one of the hikes but we had the dog and she is not allowed on the trails and the boys would not let dad stay back with the dog. This may be one of our new favorites, we have stayed at Palomar for years and drive on down to julian for day trips and somehow we have missed this each time. Normally we check out any place that has camping on our journeys out and about. But all in all we will be going back here in the future.
