If the link doesn't work, it's just a few threads below this one.  Also, do a search here for Chincoteague.  If memory serves, there are a few people here that have been there a whole lot more than me!

I've never been to the Pony Swim, so I can't speak for that.

On the Island of Chincoteague the only campground that I saw that I liked was Tom's Cove.  The island is packed with people and vehicles.  If you plan to go to see the swim be prepared for bugs, mud, crowds and a short view of the swim.  It is over in just a minute or two.:)

Was just in Chincoteague, Va. Last weekend. Toms Cove is nice a bunch of seasonals there though. Try to get a spot back by the docks. Really nice back there at night with a fire going and watching the lighthouse light. plus they have a nice pier for fishing and crabing. Of course the Pony swim had come and gone. We took our bikes and went for bike rides all over the islands every morning. You got about a dozen or so suvenier shops plenty of resturants and two mini-golf places. We got a week long pass for 10 bucks that let us go to the wildlife section and the ocean to swim. One word of advice, Always have your bug spray on hand and of course a cooler of cold BEER!

We used to tent camp at Maddox -- it's the closest cg to the beach and sits right on the bay -- we always got a site right along the marshy water and had a view of the lighthouse.  I doubt there was electric at that area but it sure was pretty.  Grassy open with parts shaded.  Bring the DEET though -- those squeeters penetrate everything else.  Even though they spray at the cg every night (with what I'm not sure . . . ), the place is certainly buggy -- but I think that's the case everywhere.  The cg does have a pool and a small store, but we didn't make much use.  The beach was a short drive away and we did our swimming and sunbathing there.
