We are taking a 2 week trip and plan to spend about 5 nights at Ridgway SP near Ouray, CO Sept 26-30. We have a popup, prefer an electric hookup for this time of year and easy lake access for our canoe. Which CG and spots do you recommend? What attractions, restaurants, sights do you also recommend. We have heard plenty about Ouray and are willing to drive there once or twice, but are mostly interested in the best campsite and fishing, as well as other activities near the Park.

Thanks in advance for your advice!

Hi, I'm new to this forum so please bear with me.

I helped build the trail near Dallas Creek on the south side of Ridgeway.  It's by far one of my favorite CO state parks so far.  Dutch Charlie campground next to the lake has a boat put-in and lots of sites, your best bet.  Po-cu-cha-puk is also beautiful but not as close.  Dallas Creek is my favorite, setting on top of a hill overlooking the entire reservoir.  Camp at Dutch Charlie, then take a drive up to Dallas Creek for spectacular views.

Absoluteley visit the Ouray Hot Springs.  The town of Ridgeway (south of the res) is a very quaint western town.  There is a pharmacy with an old soda fountain (can't remember name), great ice cream!  If you have time and can drive a ways, Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is a must.  Probably a good day trip.

Here is the link for Colorado State Parks in case you don't have it.  //www.parks.state.co.us

Don't forget your fishing rod!

Thanks, CampDirt!  We ended up staying at the Elk Run Campground on the D loop, which overlooks the lake.  Beautiful site, but the lake didn't seem too inviting for fishing.  I am still a bit leary of larger lakes in my canoe, so, we drove to Silver Jack and fished there.   Incredible aspen viewing near Silver Jack, as well as the Million Dollar Highway!  Went to the Black Canyon of the Gunnison, as well as Orvis Hot Springs (clothing optional!)
Really enjoyed the area, and 5 days wasn't quite enough.  Didn't make it to Telluride, could have spent more time fishing, but got our fishing fix later on on the Grand Mesa after and Buena Vista before.  All in all, a great 2 weeks.  I posted more about the trip on my Grand Mesa thread, mosey on over there and read the story.
