Quote from: AzusateachI want to know more about this place before I vote.  Bakersfield -- and surrounding areas -- can be hotter than blazes in October, and I'm not particularly keen on placing myself in an oven, especially when school has just started & I'm tired of months of heat.  Staying on this side of the Grapevine might offer at least the illusion of cooler temperatures, but I can be swayed with nice pictures that include lots of shade, and certainly good company.

I agree that someone needs to contact the CG to find out if there's anything available before we all go getting ourselves revved up for a place that might not be available.  Maybe a call before Christmas, just to check this out, would be in order.  Then we all can ruminate on it until after the hustle & bustle has died down a bit.

Thanks for your willingness to spearhead this!

Laura

Do you not have A/C in your new Hybrid???

I know where Bob works and THIS is not his slow time. I think it can wait until after xmas. The urgency was Vail Lakes was already filling up and it looks like we've decided not to go there.

Dee4j

did some investigating.  we can wait until after the holidays..

from what I'm understanding on their website http://www.co.kern.ca.us/parks/bv_reservations.pdf

is they only make reservations 15 weeks in advance and you can only reserve 2 sites. so we may have to do a "self serve" reservation part of the rally.

I tried calling but line is busy. It's wed. which I think will be their busiest call date (due to their example  on how to reserve a site) everyone calling now would be reserving for Easter week.

Why I was calling them is to find out more about the sites. which ones are FULL hook-up and also they mention there is plenty of room for 2 large Motorhomes or 2 5th wheels & trucks on one site but do they have hook-ups for 2. if so some of us may want to double up so we aren't spread so far apart.

Azusateach

With all due respect, Dee, I do have AC -- had it on the PUP.  But if I have to sit inside to keep from melting I might as well stay at home.

Again, with all due respect, this place is sounding less & less attractive.  Reserving 15 weeks in advance means that someone has to watch the calendar (kind of like what might happen with Shaver Lake ...).  And if not all sites have hook-ups, then that could pose a problem if people who are more ... "organized" make the call first to get hook-ups & don't really need sewer, and those who'd really like totally full hook-ups lose out.

Respectfully (get the feeling I'm a little nervous here?), couldn't we do better?  Isn't there some place, maybe toward Santa Barbara, that has full hook-ups, will accomodate our size group, and accept reservations now?

And, Wavery, it's Jed ... ;)

Nasty faux pas :p

Don't tell Carolyn that I did that. :D

She can hardly wait to get her hands on JED (Jud is the name of Carolyn's boss's dog that hangs out at her work).

Hi  it's me again,
I have to laugh about today. I had tried to call today to buena vista reservation hot line. It was busy, constanly busy! I now know why! It was Dee calling them and if wasn't Dee on the line then as Dee said, it was people who wanted to book their sites for Easter! How funny that the two of us without knowing the other was calling the same place at the same time.
Well I did get through after Dee got off the phone and Dee has beat me to the punch with info. I appreciate Dee's effort in doing so, because as she said also this is not my slow time. We will do over $2 million in sales this week alone. So I can tell you that the girl that I talked to did listen to what questions I had about reserving sites. She did tell me that although each wed. is the day to call and she gave what date I would need to call in 2007. I really made it plain that I was going to be the wagonmaster of this rally with about 35 familes in mid october. She really did not think that there would be a problem! The girl at the reservation desk also is going to send me some brochures about things that are not online. She thought it would also be possible that I might be able to make all the reservations at one time! That is something I would strive to do for the group as one of my duties.
I want to thank Wayne for bringing up the weather temps of Oct. For the most part, every Oct. is in the low 80's during the day and 50's at night. There are 112 sites with 82 of them being full hookups.
I will in the near future, go out to the campground and take pictures and download them for all to see.
I hope that Dee and I have made a few more things clear. And Dee, bonfires are OK! I will also check the sites very closely to find out about double parking two trailers and being able to have two of everything for hookups.

This shouldn't be a big deal. You buy a hose splitter (hooks up to one spigot, but then splits into two for two hoses to hook up to -- for a word picture, a two-headed snake). For electrical, an industrial electrical extension cord should work, or for that matter, most boxes I've seen have two outlets in each box even though most of us use only one outlet.

Just my two cents. I'm 99.9% confident we won't be able to go, unless David tears out his other shoulder for next season!!! (By the way, the coach lettered him anyway because he had played all through summer season and everything, so we now have a letterman in the house!)

cjpoppin

I looked around the site and found it said there are trees and picnic tables at each site which are large....You can have up to fifteen people at a site and two cars and up to two dogs at four dollars a day so there should not be a problem with our trailers etc......However could not find any pic's.....Has anyone camped here and taken pictures that you could post?  As far as it being in the desert that's fine with us.....After all we live in the desert and are used to the weather.....We need Electric, water and sewer is nice.......
As long as we can get all the sites we need and the place passes our inspection sounds like a maybe.......As stated before just getting together with our group is the fun part.....Another question will we be able to put up our Halloween decorations?  This has really become an important part of this camp out to our family........Carol     :XMas

I know that it isn't perfect but you can go to GoogleEarth, do a search for "35.231n 119.261w" (without quotes). It will take you right to the CG and you can search the entire area. The pictures are old but it gives you a good idea of the place and it's suroundings.

Here's a couple images for those that don't have GoogleEarth:

oldmoose

I did some searching.

Here's a map of the campground. It looks like the sites are drive through.

I first want to thank Bob for stepping up to be the wagon master for this CG in Bakersfield. I know that we can not make everyone happy with our choices, but I hope everyone comes out to be with the good people of Sccampers. I also hope that we can make the arrangements to try out this new to us CG. I am the one that suggested this CG and would really like to camp there at least once.

But   :yikes:
I just came across another CG that I think is even better then Vail Lake. And in a great location (who knew !!!)

Check out East Shore RV Park
this is one we need to try in the future  :D

MAN!  This looks good - and it truly is a more central location for a weekend rally.  We WILL go with the group wherever because we love this tradition, but I have to admit - I'd prefer a closer drive.  This would be more in the middle for everyone who comes from afar - like Viking, you guys and Freedom5.  Temecula was a HIKE for all of you.  The group rates look awesome, too.

been there . I actually drove thru it after the RV show in Oct. it's about 20-20 min from my house.
it's a nice place from what I saw. I would reserve sites across the street from each other vs back to back as there is alot of space in between.

The problem with this place is it is near the fairgrounds so it's always booked. I'd have to go back and look but they take reservations 1-2 years in advance.

when I drove thru there were several large groups doing Halloween stuff and potlucks

that's as far as I got with it...checked it out but haven't followed thru on any sort of reservations

Bakersfield will be a trek for us too..actually I'm making plans not knowing what is going
to happen next year when Kevin starts High school ...I'm entering Trina's world of scheduling

BTW..Trina ..Tell David Congrats!!! how is his shoulder doing???

OC Campers

Not to put a damper on this cg but we have stayed at East Shore RV a couple of times with our church campout.  We always stayed in the bottom section.  It is a nice place for a group outing.  The sites are large, grassy and the trailer pad is paved.  They also have a large fire pit for Dee's bonfire.  I think all of the sites have full hookups.  Now there were a few things we didn't like.

1)  They have a SEVERE skunk problem.  I swear hundreds of them come out at night.  Our friends golden retriever got sprayed in the face the last time we were there.  To a suburban dog a skunk is just another dog until the tail gets llifted:yikes: .

2)  The bathrooms were nasty.  I don't think they were cleaned the entire weekend we were there.  This was the first time we had ever seen feces smeared all over the wall before.

3)  The cg  is set at the end of a runway to the small airport in Pomona.  We had small aircraft taking off all day over our campsites.  It was very noisy.

Now one of the good points is there is a lot to do for the kids.  Raging waters water park is just across the lake from the campground.

Sorry, I just wanted to give you my .02 worth.
