Awning Poles

Okay, you can file this as a SPUT..... Last year I put my awning away wet and totally forgot about it. When I opened the PU 2 months later, I realized my mistake. (Yes, we did not camp for 2 months.) Needless to say we had to throw it away.

What we would like to do this year is use our gigantic tarp and cover the entire PU when we camp. This will keep the rain off of it and provide enough shade that we can sit under it. I need to get some poles for the tarp so we can use it as giant canopy. I need something a little longer than the standard awning poles to keep it off of the top of the PU. The ones I do have are the kind that twist and lock into place and then when you unlock them they collapse into themselves to make it a shorter pole.

Sooooooo... Does anyone know where I can get these poles or have any suggestions in lieu of using the poles? Thanks for your help. Sherry

Keep in mind that those tarps can be very heavy when held up from the corners. I would think you would have to support one end of the tarp by securing it to the PU roof or by the awning rail in the roof of the PU. I would recommend using those aluminum painter poles. they are strong and have the twist lock and sliding feature that you were referring too.

Keep in mind that those tarps can be very heavy when held up from the corners. I would think you would have to support one end of the tarp by securing it to the PU roof or by the awning rail in the roof of the PU.

I would actually use 6-8 poles around the PU, not just at the corners.  That's why I am looking for more but I will keep that in mind.  We always try to get a site with tree nearby too so we can anchor it to that if need be.

I picked up four at BassPro Shop - called "adjustable height poles" and they were something like $9.95 ea (understand Wally-Mart has the same thing for four bucks less!)

My last trip out where I used the plastic tarp over the camper, had a wide site where I could sort of set the camper into the site caddy-wapus. There I had two trees at each end of the camper, where I tied a long stretch of parachute cord and had the tarp hanging over it. Then used the adjustable height poles on all four corners, using another short piece of p cord from the top of the poles to the ground, using regular tent stakes. Since there are plently of gromets along the sides of the tarp, tied off to a couple other trees, too. I also use the PUP's regular awning, too, only here the tarp is going beyond the awning, expending the awning area, and the awning poles also providing support for the tarp. What I liked about doing the cord length ways over the PUP is that I could open the roof vent; where the tarp is using the PUP as center support, you can't open the roof vent.

I noticed some Ozark Trail brand Awning poles at Walmart in the camp section. They were made of some kind of metal and are adjustible from 4 to 8 feet high. The poles also include the little spike thingy for taking the loop rivet of a tarp. I have looked for poles before, they can be kinda tuff to find because generally they are sold with the awnings or tents or shelters etc... Sometimes if you can find a shelter that has the type of pole you are looking for, you can order replacement poles to use however needed. Good luck!!!
