Hello all,   we were just looking and found the Philpott Recreation area.  It's only about 45 minutes from us, and from the pics they have some beautiful campsites (w/s/e) on the lake in the Goose Point section.

Anyone ever camped here?  If so, opinions please?

Thanks......

Hi,
I have camped at a place called Goose Point but I'm not sure if this is the same place you are talking about. I googled Philpott Recreation and didn't get any clear info about the area. I wasn't real happy with the Goose Point area I went to but without more details I'm not sure if we're talking about the same place. Most places on and near the water are pretty, so good luck and Happy Camping!

Philpott Lake has both a state park (Fairy Stone SP w/campgrounds) and Corps of Engineers campgrounds with Goose Point being the more popular.
We camped there quite a bit last year and have photos posted on the Va Campers Photo Gallery

Beach, swimming, boating, fishing are quite popular in the warm months and the campgrounds are spaceous and manicured. Clean restrooms, W/E hookup and dump station available.

I forgot to add that I have already booked another 4 separate weeks for 07 at Goose Point and am awaiting warm weather and the 1st of Apr.  Loop C is the lower level on the water and site 18 is large and can accomodate larger class A's.

 Hope this helps.

Thanks for all the info.  We have booked site 17 for May 28 to June 1 and August 12 to August 17...Can't wait to check it out!

One question you might be able to answer.  Their site says 50 amp service.  Do they also have the plug for 30 amp service or do I need to get a "dog bone" adapter?

Thanks again!

GimmySan, I really like the screen room...where did you get it?  And as for firewood, I would guess it's bring your own?

Thanks,
Brad

Brad,
 Electric = 30A, 50A & a duplex 15A. Nothing else is needed.
Water = pressure regulated hookup but I still use an inline one when I hook up.

I might make a note here about the campground.  The c.g. was renovated a little over 4 years ago so facilities are practically brand new. Paved road to a fine gravel site with most sites shaded.  Maintenance crews keep the c.g. clean - contract maintenance so I hope that any funding cutbacks have not hit them. Ranger patrolled with host campers at the gate.

Sites are almost level with minor adjustments for getting the rig level. A few boards will do the job.  Backing in to #17 and setting in the driver's seat you will find it has a sleight slope to the left.

Bring your own firewood but check with the COE at Goose Point for any burn restrictions.  The county may have restrictions but the campground may not.
 Virginia Burn Restriction Website
Bookmark that site as it is updated often.

I believe that the best source for the Eureka Hex screen room is BackCountry with free shipping.  I got mine several years ago when it was 99 + shipping so Backcountry isn't too far over that.  I also have a E-Z Up but much heavier and no screen.  I love the Eureka Hex, easy to put up and take down, 2 opposite panels zip up and act as doors.

Hope you enjoy the area and have a great time at Goose Point.

Jimmy,

Thanks a bunch for all that info...you even know the slope of site we've booked! Wow!

I've saved this thread to my email files, and I'm sure before we go we'll pull it out again and review.

Thanks again for all your help!

Brad,
You might want to check out my photo gallery for some shots of Goose Point and some other campgrounds in SW VA.  DW and I had some time last winter when the weather was nice to do a little traveling and gathered photos of some cg's.

I have reservations mid-May at Goose Point but if I get the chance to drop by at the end of the month, I'll stop and say hi.

Thanks for the pictures on your site.  That has got to be one of the nicest looking campgrounds I have ever seen.  This will definately go on the list of a must do trip for either this year or next.  Thanks for the info.
