Well we bought our first popup a few weeks ago, and I decided I needed to repack the wheel bearings, since it looked like the trailer hadn't been maintained.  Well all was well till I tried to get teh grease seal.  I went to Kragen, and they asked me what it was for I said "a trailer" oh we don't do trailers!

So I called pepboys, no.  Then two other places in the Tavelland RV place until, I finally found someone to help.  Moral of the story, don't go to your local parts store and expect them to carry what you need.

Thanks El Toro RV.

An RV or trailer maintenance place will almost always have the seals.  It would be an item they stock, so the only reson they wouldn't would be if they ran out.

Having said that, I have bought seals at NAPA, Champion, and a local guy.  I don't tell tem it's for a trailer, I say it's for a Dexter axle and give them a part number, then they had to skip the computer and look in the paper book, but they had them.

I work for Advance Auto Parts and I've tried crossing the part number for my seal without any luck. I have a Dexter axle with 7" brakes and BCA/National does not list a cross for the Dexter number. I just go back to the dealer where I bought my PU.

It pays to shop around too- I went through the same thing with a boat trailer.  I virtually destroyed the seal getting it out and the number magically was where I used the pullers.  No local stores could find anything for it.  I was able to decipher the number on the seal and verify it on the internet after some research.  It turns out that all of the local stores did have it but at prices varying from $20 each to $4 each.

Make several calls before you buy and buy several as spares.

I got mine from the local advance auto.  like the previous posted said, they had to skip the computer and go to the paper book.  I also kept the box for new seal so i could either get the same one next time or cross reference that one for one from a different manufacter.

What kind of axle do you have?

PatB

I have a Dexter axle and found a truck repair place about 40 miles from my house that stocked their parts. The parts were surprising cheap, so I bought numerous sets of parts. Someone else had posted a site where they were selling the complete brake assembly from the plate on out. I think some of the sizes were as cheap as $40. So for $40 you could get an entire set of replacement parts for one side of your axle.

If you are not certain which axle you have this site is a good place to start:   //www.dexteraxle.com You can browse through the attached list: Axle Replacement Parts

unfortunately, while looking for the bearing box i realized i put the in my book of camper info so i would know where that was the next time i needed it.  The bad part is the book is inside my pop up and not very accessible.  like i said before, i took the old seal to my local advance auto and they were able match it up using the book and not the computer.  if i get into the pu anytime soon i will post the part number.  sorry for getting your hopes up. :(

I found mine at the local NAPA store.  They werent the exact unit we pulled out, but everything except the thickness was the same.  The original was about 3/8 thick while the replacement was around 1/4.  As you all know, the function of the seal is to keep the grease in so the depth really doesn't matter.

They were $1.68 each at NAPA and on the shelf.
