I am looking for campgrounds in Virginia. We are fairly new to the camping scene and have tried Smith Mountain Lake and Westmoreland state parks. The main family group is 13 which include seven children (new born to age 9), two sets of parents and one set of grand parents. At present we are all tent camping BUT I have plans to purchase a popup this spring.
My requirements are fairly simple; I need a campground that is family friendly with good activities for the children and has CLEAN bath houses. I have looked at a lot of websites about the different campgrounds but I don

If you are willing to travel down I-81 to the area where I-77 intersects it, then I would recommend the RJ Ranch.  We had a rally there a few years ago.:)

The campgrounds at Natural Bridge are extemely nice and the hike up to the bridge and beyond is worth it. The evenning entertainment at the bridge is very beautiful. There are museums, etc. for entertainment.

I have camped at many of our state parks and found each to be a pleasant experience. Do an internet search. All the parks have activities and they vary from park to park. For instance, First Landing has a beach and a lovely old-growth forest and wetlands; Kiptopeke (on the Eastern Shore) has a great beach and fishing pier; James River has canoe access; it goes on and on. After all, there are 25 parks to choose from, most are $24 a night.

We stayed at Bull Run Campground which is near Manassas, VA just last weekend and it was great. Bring your kite there is a large open area to let the kids run, playground, walking trails and much more. Bathhouse was very clean although they are working on one so make sure to pick a site close to the one that's open.
Hope you enjoy camping!

Hi Dave... Not sure where you are in Northern Virginia...we're in the area too. Most all the Virginia State Parks are great. The Yogi Bear in Luray is a good family campground. Closer to "home" Pohick Bay close to Ft. Belvoir is a good one....Prince William Forest park (if you don't have to have hookups),  both nice quick ones for weekend trips,   Bull Run mentioned above is nice,   Lake Farifax seems nice but I've only driven through there ....check out our Webshots page and you can see pictures and reviews of many Virginia campgrounds. :>
