I am looking for a good campground around Busch Gardens.  There is a review here that is not favorable to the KOA in the area.  Any other suggestions are really welcome.

Thanks

You may want to steer clear of Anvil Campground as well, unless you are fond of trains and traffic noise all night long (the trains run 3 or 4 times throughout the night). For us, we didn't mind at all as we love trains!! We have stayed twice and the second time I made sure to pack the Unisom, lol. They do, however, have their good points as far as we are concerned. I would stay again, but like I said, we love trains!!

search on virginia beach as well. We did this trip last year (and posted here)
1. There is a state park closer to Chessapeak that everyone seemed to like, didn't get a chance to check it out.
2. stay away from anvil. Old, quaint, extremely limited facilities, mostly perminant campers with a few open sites, backs on the rr. tracks.
3. KOA Williamburg is actually TWO SEPERATE campgrounds, about a mile apart. The two have Distinctly different feels. We stayed at the southern of the two, a little nicer, not much shade. The other is smaller, hilly, tend to put the popups at the top of the hill (tough road up that hill). We didn't have a problem there, but we stayed only the weekend.
4. Our favorite option is to stay at Virginia beach (about 1 1/2 hrs West of williamsburg; the the Holiday Trav-L-park or the KOA Virginia beach. You get the beach, discount tickets to Williamsburg/busch gardens, and short trip up 64 to the attractions.

We stayed at Newport News CG. It is a municipal CG and doesn't have tons of amenties but it is great for the area. They do have water and electrci hookups and hot showers. The bathrooms are dated but are in great shape.

I will add a warning on the commute from VA Beach.  I live in Williamsburg & see the traffic backing up on the west side of 64 on a regular basis.  It tends to be a sure thing for the weekends in the middle of the summer.  It's not too bad this month, although I have seen it at a standstill already this season.  I suppose it depends on your tolerance for traffic jams.  Bush is opening a new coaster for late spring.  Hope it's running when you get there.

DW and I stayed here a few weeks ago.  It is like a parking lot but one of the nicer ones.  Sites are pull through with a pad for table.

They have a couple of nature trails for a nice walk.  Bathrooms were in the process of being renovated and should be done by now.

Staff was very pleasant and friendly.

Cheaper than the KOA and actually, it is only a few miles from the two KOA's in the area.

Have stayed at Anvil and Colonial KOA.  I would recommend American Heritage over the other two.

I don't know when you are going but I would recommend reservations be made for any of the three, especially if you are going to include a weekend.

We just stayed at the Newport News Campground and it was great! Lots of shade, very inexpensive, great security, large sites with cement pads for campers and close to Williamsburg. There were only 2 negatives...bathrooms were not that great (although tolerable!) and there are ticks!
