We are new to the PU camping.

Just wanted to know if anybody had any good camping spots within a couple hour drive from Washington DC.
Would really love a campground with private wooded sites.  I really hate beening stacked like sardeens or all the time having a view of our camping neighbors.

Thanks,
Jamie

If you really want a couple hours from DC, that opens a lot of area.  We like Elk Neck State Park.  It's about 2 hours from DC.  If you want to hit Western MD, we really like New Germany State Park , but that's about 4 hours from DC.  There are no hookups and no pets in this park.

If you want to head on up to PA, we camped for the first time at Codorus State Park .  A really nice park.

And just in case nobody has invited you yet, take a look at the Mid-Atlantic Campers  forum.  We have a bunch of trips planned over the course of the Summer.  A great bunch of folks to camp with.

If all you want is a quite campground close to DC, then you could check out Little Bennet Regional Park in Clarksburg, MD
http://www.mc-mncppc.org/parks/enterprise/park_facilities/little_bennett/index.shtm

The is not much to do there but hike through the woods, but it is close to DC.

We like Cunningham Falls State Park in Thurmont, MD. http://www.dnr.state.md.us/publiclands/western/cunninghamfalls.html

and  Greenbrier State Park.  http://www.dnr.state.md.us/publiclands/western/greenbrier.html

If you want to check out more campgrounds in the area, look at this site. http://www.epgsoft.com/CampgroundMap/
It is based on Google earth and show the location and website of a hugh number of campgrounds.

If you don't mind dry camping, try the Greenbelt National Park.  10 miles from downtown. One mile from a metro stop. The campground is little used so you will have plenty of peace and quiet. Their is wild life. It is a Natiional park They have hot showers and flush toilets and campground hosts.  If you do take the metro you can get an all day pass after 10:00 a.m.  I have camped there three times in the last five years.

Looks really cool. I love Maryland (when there's no bugs :p ).

Nobody's mentioned Pohick Bay SP in Lorton, VA.  S of Washington near Mt. Vernon.  Beautiful park, about 10 miles to Metro station.
