Hello

Has anybody ever camped at Assateague State Park?   If so how was everything?  Anybody stay in loop (I) in sites 42 or 44?  We have both reserved for our first PU camping trip.
Thanks for the info

I camp at Assateague Island 2 or 3 times a year, but only 3 or 4 times in the state park.  They have hot showers and flush toilets, a playground area, a snack shop in the day use area, and like the national park, NO shade, very flat, lots of bugs, and horses wandering around.  It can be very windy.  I can't help you with the specific sites.  It has been years since we camped at the state park.  Have fun, when are you going?:)

The horse flies are much worse than mosquitos.  It's a beautiful park.  While you are they you should take a trip over to Frontier Town a western themed campground they have some sites close to the water, unless you only camp bare bones.

Enjoy.  There is a lot to do, from outlet shopping to pier fishing.

We camp at Assateague State Park in I loop every year (probably about 10-12 years now)  - Assateague is our favorite place to camp EVER - it's a beautiful, natural, magical place and the most relaxing place we have ever been.  The sites you are asking about are not on the best side of that loop (in my opinion).  That side is farthest from the beach and is more "scrubby" and buggy than the better side, although the 2 sites you mention aren't as bad as some others on that side.  The better side is the side where sites 56-104 are located (ocean side).

We have had very few bug issues at Assateague mostly because we always pick sites right near the ocean - the ocean breeze seems to keep the bugs away.  The problem is, if you want the really good sites, you have to book a year ahead of time and even then it's hard to get the good sites!

The best things about Assateague are the quiet, the ocean breezes, the beautiful natural beach (only steps from your campsite), the wild ponies and sika deer (yes, they really do walk right up to your campsite), the feeling of soft sand between your toes as you step out of your camper onto the beach.  The bath houses are very nice and kept clean - with private showers and hot water, sinks with electrical outlets.

As for Frontier Town - that is a cute looking place, but to be  honest, I wouldn't go near it with a 10 foot pole!  It looks like it's swarming with kids and it seems very commercialized.  Assateague is a true escape.
