Has anyone had any experiance or advice on the coleman portable firepit/bbq?  I just purchased one thinking it would be great as it's set up for both firepit and bbq, however the bowl is 22" and dose not have a bottom grate in it, it also has no mention in the instuctions reguarding using charcoal.  When you use it for a bbq it still says to use wood and place grate over it.  My question is dose it matter if you use wood or charcoal?  Does charcoal burn hotter than wood?  I know it sounds stupid but I'd rather be safe than sorry.  Any suggestions would help.

Toby.

We have a Coleman Firepit we bought almost 10 years ago.  We have used charcoal on it.  It hasa large grate for firewood in it .  What we used was 2 old wire shelfs from a refrigerator that fit perfect over the grate.  Kept the charcoal off the bottom and only allowed the ash to fall thru.  Used the other shelf as the grille part with long wooden handled hot dog skewers between the side grates to adjust the height.  It worked just fine.  We tried just firewood and you really can't control the cook rate or flame.  We have a regualr gas grille now and just use the Coleman for bonfires.  I'm not sure but I beleive that charcoal is hotter than fire wood, but really don't know  for sure.

Are you talking about the discontinued Roadtrip Fireplace?  Or, the new Pack-Away Portable model?

I just purchased the old blue model on Ebay about a month ago.  I don't think I ever intended to use it as a BBQ, (just as a portable firepit).  However, it did come with a charcoal grate.

Weber sells replacement parts, perhaps one or their's might work, or be modified by a welder to work with your model.

Thanks for the reply, I bought the pack away portable.  As I see in the link you posted it says it's ok for charcoal or wood, no were in my manuals dose it say anything reguarding charcoal.  I greatley appreciate the info.  I think I will still go and get a seprate grate for the bottom for the charcoal maybe if the charcoal is off the bottom it would work better and longer.  I bought it for a fire pit and the cost but like to be able to use it when we have guest.  It always seems we never have enough space on the bbq when the rest of the family comes with us.  We will be trying it out this weekend and let you know how it works.  Thanks again.
