We've been camping with our little Stracraft 1701L for a couple years now. It doesnt come with a cassette potty and both myself and the DW have had the fun of just settling down and hearing either the 5 yo or the 4 yo say "I have to go pee pee". Last year especially it seemed every time we went camping it rained the entire camping trip. I was lucky enough to come across a Thetford 565 porta potty in good shape and I bought it. I also bought a Ozark Trail shower with changing room tentlet where we plan on putting the potty during the day. At night I plan on putting the potty in front of our door. I also plan on making a privacy curtain when the potty is in the pop up.

My DW bought a porti-potti at wally mart when we first bought our new-to-us pup. We place it on top of the icechest at night (we have an add-a-room) and DW, DD, and DS and I use it instead of walking to the bathroom at night or in the rain, Very easy to maintain and keep clean. and of course liquids only!!

Privacy??? What's that???

And Lisa, since you are looking at a porta potty, you do have a little time.  Can you do without a potty for 1 trip?  If so, let your husband know that you will give it a shot without a porta potty, but he is responsible for taking the kids to the bath house every time they have to use the potty.  Once he has to deal with going there all hours of the night, you will have your porta potty on your next trip.

As for the shower/potty combo, we were looking at those first.  We decided that we really didn't need the shower, but the potty was a requirement.  We don't miss the shower because we've never had one in a pup.  It would be a convenience, but for me, it would be far more of a pain in the butt than a convenience.

I'm the one that has to empty all that extra water used.  I'm the one that would have to put more water into the under floor tank.  For me, it's not worth the trouble.

I wouldn't have a PU without a shower and potty.  The convenience makes it worth it in the long run.  Good luck on getting what you want.:)

We have only owned 1 pop-up and it has the cassette w/ shower.  We wouldn't know what to do without it.  It is wonderful not having to walk to the bath house during the middle of the night.  The shower also works great too.  If we are at a campground with a nice showerhouse we will use that but our shower is much cleaner than most at campgrounds.

We have an itty-bitty pop-up (only sleeps 3) and the first thing I bought for it was a porta-potti. There is nothing worse than waking up in the middle of the night and having to search for clothing (take that for what it is worth, lol) in order to go to the bathroom (add a flashlight to that list in some cases). Not to mention the fact that I could rarely find my shoes (learned that flip-flops were the BOMB). During the last trip of the season last year I invested in a "PP Tee-pee" from Wally World. While we do not normally set up the PP Tee-Pee for a one night trip, we still set up the potty in the camper. We have never been offended by the "odor" (we strictly limit use to #1) because we use a good deodorizer. Personally, I would much rather deal with the smell of the deodorizer than a 3am trip to the campground facility. Insofar as the idea of going to the bathroom right next to where you cook, we never cook in our PUP so that is not an issue. We do not prepare food in the PUP either. Even if we did, I would not have an issue.

Hope this helps!!

We bought a lil portable chem toilet... but I say its for emergencies... (I have that cleanin duty) DW says when she has to go.... It is an Emergency.... So for our backcountry trips we have a lil tent..($34.00 walllymart) a 5 gal bucket and kitty litter...
Bag it and go!!!

My 2 cents may be to late.  Having a potty inside is no big deal - no smell, and when you think our fore fathers lived in 1 room.  We removed our water tank and installed a real camper potty that we hook directly up to the sewer no problems with odor and as long as I flush the line with water before tear down we have had to problem.  We installed a curtain to close off the potty area and this is also where I and my dh change our clothes for privacy.  (When we have dry camped in the past as well as 10 years of tenting - we use the sink and bathhouse as well as carry in our own water).

good luck - on stormy nights or just late night i and my girls appreciate having a potty indoors.

My DH said "I want you to be happy, so we will get the camper you want. No point buying something that we end up regretting later." So I called the dealership selling the camper today and told them that we changed our mind about it. He wasn't too happy about that until I said that instead we would like a quote on a brand new Williamsburg model!

Yes, that's right... we are gonna bite the bullet and buy the one that not only has the space/slide out like the Utah, but has the shower/cassette toilet combo.  And since it seems like one has to be very lucky to get a used one like that (at least anywhere near us), we are gonna get a new trailer and get it exactly like we want it.

Of course, it's not escaped my husband's notice that we are actually gonna end up paying more than double what we originally planned on!

Thanks for everyone's help,

Lisa

Congratulation on your new popup!

Tell DH he will not regret it, and you will LOVE it when you give the kids their baths.

Like my husband, yours will be taking his showers in the popup in no time!
