This weather stuff is really a guessing game at any level. I will tell you that I have studied weather extensively for many years because my life depended on it when I was sailing.

If you click on the link below, you will notice an area right on the CA/NEV border near Lake Tahoe that the clouds are starting to turn in a counter-clockwise motion. That is the area of low pressure that is causing the cold front that may be effecting our area.

The problem is, it is deepening very rapidly (as shown in these satellite images). That means that the heavy cold air is falling into the center of that low and cold wet air is being sucked down from Alaska (as you can also see in these images). If and/or when that area moves south, it could cause severe weather in the Southland. There is some indication that it may move off to the East. If it does, we will be fine (it would get ugly for the mid-west though). If that system keeps deepening and moving south (which would be unusual), it could be real problems for us.

You may also notice 2 hurricanes forming in the Pacific ocean, off of Mexico. I think that they may be effecting the steering of the low over Lake Tahoe.

Quote from: Sue HardeeWe are planning to leave S.D. early a.m. because we took the day off....but now I a worried about the winds and pulling the trailer up the mountain. I am also concerned with flash floods and mud run off. We have been in one at a mountain campground and it wasn't pretty. After we get there it rain, snow and blow..I don't care.... We thought we might want to stay until Monday...weather is forecaste to be sunny Sunday and Monday. Please let me know if you plan on cancelling this trip..I don't want to be the only crazy camper out there!

I don't see us cancelling. We are hitching up the trailer tonite. I am considering leaving early(afternoon) on Friday if Brian can get home. Todd and KEvin are arriving Thursday. I think Brian has their cell#. Maybe he can try and get ahold of them on Friday morning and get a weather report for you.

I don't know whether to think that because we're Southern Californians, we're overreacting to a little precipitation or whether to be worried enough to think about not going....

griffsdad

Are we not SCCampers?

We will be leaving early Friday.

Ok, after some research, I found that it will be best for me to take the 15 South to the 215, exit at the 30 West, take that to the 18 and up.

How much of a hill am i going to have to deal with?

I was told by countless people that if I had anything other than a pop-up to stay as far away from taking the 138 through Silverwood & Crestline to get there.

I thought you were joking!! about how to get there. If you come from the north its a windy road, but from 18 it still is but not as bad ,2 lanes most of the way till you hit the bridge overcrossing then down to one lane and your just about there and I can normally pull the pup (small 10' box) with no problem at max speed. The biggest problem might be fog and then your looking at 25 mph or less up the hill.Looking forward to meet all the SCCampers that show up. Take the Waterman exit off the 30 it turns into 18. If you pass the High school there is a turn out that you should be able to turn around in.

Hey Mike my DS has gone to camp Pali the last 3 years for science camp these are the directions I use to get there is this the right way??

I-10 Freeway East to CA-30 towards Mountain Cities/Running Springs.
Veer right on the ramp at the sign reading "CA-330N to Mtn Resorts" and continue on CA-330 northeast for 15 miles.
Take exit ramp on the right at the sign reading "Running Springs" and go east 600 feet until you come to a yield sign (if you go under an overpass, you have passed the Running Springs exit and are on your way to Big Bear).
Turn a hard left on CA-18, Rim of the World Hwy, and go northeast towards Lake Arrowhead.
Go exactly 2.7 miles on CA-18, and turn right at Pali Mountain! (Please obey 15 mph limit).

330 is east of 18, this link may to big but it shows the route:

Dont want anyone to get lost. You may have to back down 6 clicks to see 18 vs 330. We go up 18 alot. This is a favorite of ours.

330 at 18 in running springs is closed at this time to the east towards the dam.

You want to head towards lake Arrowhead off the 18 and if you go past the " Rim to the world high school" youve gone to far.

That's the way I'm going.  Is there a gas station before we assend the 18.
(Assend means "go up" Dee) :)

oreo57

straight up the hill, NO sign for Dogwood (maybe) but look for the Blue jay turn off going north and the CG entrance is a very close turn off of 18, going east its a left and quick right into the CG then down a road to the gate. :yikes:

Yes, IIRC there is one on right off the freeway.
