Going to Cape Cod this weekend to camp for the week.  Staying at Sweetwater Forest in Brewster.  I am interested in any suggestions for beaches to hit, or to avoid as the case may be.  We hope to go out to either Martha's Vineyard or Nantucket.  We may do whale watching but I am finding that it will cost almost $200 for us all to go, and I am struggling with that.  We'll see.  Would love to hear some ideas.  Thanks.

You can't go wrong with any of the beaches in Brewster. Stayed for years on the Atlantic side of the cape. Cold water ,crowds etc. The water in the bay is warmer, and there are alot less people. When the tide is out you can walk for a 1/2 mile to reach the water.I'm not sure if it's Paine's creek beach or not, But one of the beaches had streams running into the ocean. Our kids had more fun playing in them then the bay. Anyway you can't go wrong at the Cape.

I lived in New England for 20 years and would highly recommend a whale watch.  They are a lot of fun and just the chance to get "up close" to these creatures is wonderful.  The price you quoted seems high to me as well; please check out the following link as I have used this fleet before:  http://www.captjohn.com/discountcruises.htm

Martha's Vineyard is the quieter of the two islands, less touristy if you will.  There is pleanty to do just by walking/hiking/short drive.  You can rent bikes or mopeds to explore as well.

The National Seashore covers most and you can't really go wrong.

Provincetown is ecclectic and artist community.  Went near there many years ago and took a beach buggy tour.  However, I also remember being warned about nude beaches. (You will find on the islands in places as well - so ask)

Enjoy

Since you've never been to Nantucket, I'm not sure how you would know this  :D

Intuition would be my guess, Austin.  You know, that mysterious gender IQ that controls our planets magnetic spin.

Good ideas PJ, and thanks.  We will probably end up doing the whale watch however my estimate is not off by much.   My "kids" fall under adult rates and with parking we are at $180+.  Even with Capt John's, by the time you add in the gas to get back and forth to Plymouth, we are probably even closer to $200.  But you seem to think it is worth it and we will probably go for it.  Don't be too tough on AB.

Keep in mind that a whale watch is often a half-day or more (depending on where you leave from).  How much would you pay for your crew to get into an amusement park for a day?

The rub with whale watches in that area is that you might not see any whales.  Sure, they guarantee that you do, but if you don't what you get is a voucher for another trip, not a refund.  If you're not going to be back in the area, you are out the $180.

But I have been on some spectacular whale watches...one where we must have seen at least 15 whales of five species.  On one watch, there was a time that we were surrounded by whales, with some porposes (sp) thown in for good measure.  Nothing like having a baby creature that weighs several tons stick one eye out of the water and look at you.

After doing a dolphin/whale watch at the ralley in Cape May NJ this year don't forget your Dramamene.   Like a guy on the boat said to me as I was leaning on the rail "They call this fun".

Let us know how that campground was for you.  That is one that we were thinking of checking out.

Thanks

I wrote  a little on the campground under campground reviews - also be happy to answer any of your questions.  And as AustinBoston must have learned long ago, PJ is a smart woman - we did a whale watch out of P-town and it was spectacular - worth every penny.
