I took our camper out for the first time about two weeks ago and the camper swayed alot. My question is there anybody are is there away to only hook a sway contoller up to my pu without having a weight distribution hitch. The thing I don't get is there an adapter for the hitch to put the ball from the sway bar to attach to? I know that a weight distribution hitch already has this ball already attached. any pics would be helpful to.

Thanks

When I bought our PU I had the dealer install a sway control similar to this when they did the hitch install.  Seemed to work great the few times I've towed with it.  You can adjust how stiff the sway control is by simply tightening the control bar.

First, not all WDH's have sway control built-in.

Second, the most common sway controls have one ball that attaches to the tongue of the trailer, usually bolted on, then a second that is attached to the "stinger" (a.k.a. "draw bar") that has the regular coupler ball on it, usually welded on.  The plate for the second ball can be welded on to almost any stinger.

This is a typical sway control unit (scroll to the center of the page) http://www.drawtite-hitches.com/WD/about_wd_hitches.htm . It

I should have said, sway bars are the third most important thing when it comes to sway control.  First is have an adequate tow vehicle, second is load properly, and avoiding sudden moves and keeping the speed down are also important.

Thanks for the advice. My coworker is going to give me his sway controller and we were looking at the sway contoller package that hakker showed me and the only thing we are missing is the piece of metal that welds to the hitch receiver. I think I'm going to try to make this piece myself and weld it to my receiver unless somebody knows where I can buy this piece seperate.
Thanks again

Yes, instead of welding the hitch plate for the sway, look into this:  http://www.campingworld.com/browse/skus/index.cfm/Outdoor-and-RV-Accessories/Tow-Center-Of-America/Hitching--Towing/Sway-Control-Adapter/skunum=21927

It bolts to your hitch instead of welding it. We have one very similar on our hitch. It simply bolts underneath the tow ball.  I found this one at Reese for less money (scroll down to Friction Sway Control Adapters) http://www.reese-hitches.com/sway_controls.htm

Hope that helps!

Yep, thats exactly what I have on mine.

The sway control is really easy to put on and take off too.  I yank it off before I make any sharp turnes (ie: backing up the PU).  Literally takes 10 seconds to remove.

If your hitch ball is welded on instead of bolted on, this will not work.  Most are bolted on, but some are welded.  Ours is, but it's a WDH.
