We are planning on swinging up to the cape from Myrtle Beach on the 30th of Aug 2007. Any suggestions about camping on the cape and best places to camp? I noticed the the National parks, 4 of them are listed , any experience with these? Also anyone try out the resorts/campgrounds?

Thanks

I believe there's a National Seashore near Hatteras that has camping.  Don't know of any National Parks in the area.  There are several other National sites, but only the one below Nags Head has camping, IIRC.  Aug 30 puts you close to the Labor Day weekend.  If you don't have reservations by now, you may be closed out or looking for a site on cancellations.

There are some nice choices down that way.

As mentioned, there are national campgrounds just south of Nags Head, near Buxton and the Lighthouse, and further down on Ocrakoke Island.  These are nice and have bathhouses, but no hookups at the sites.

We just stayed in Frisco at the Frisco Woods Campground.  We ended up with a water/electric site right on the Pamlico Sound - literally 30' from the water.  This offered great sunsets in the evening and a light breeze most of the time that eliminated most of the bug issues.  They have several bathhouses, pool, laundry, etc.  and keep the place pretty clean. I thought they were a bit pricey, $45-50 a night, but if you can snag a soundside slot you will have a nice time.

We stopped by Ocean Waves on the way down Hwy 12.  This place doesn't have all the 'flash' of a KOA, but is neat as a pin, has a pool, and you have direct access to the ocean over a sanddune at the end of the park.  They are also only about $40 in primetime!!

If you haven't been down that way, make sure you ride the ferry over to Ocrakoke Island (free) and check out the village and the best beaches on the East Coast.

Have Fun!

I've driven through 3 of these campgrounds, but I haven't stayed there. They all have baths/showers, but cold water only. No hookups at the camp sites. It gets really hot there in the summer, so I've been reluctant to camp there. In the fall or spring would be nice, I'm sure. My DW wants HOT showers, though!

I, too, have stayed at Frisco Woods 4 or 5 times. My DW and I really like the place. We've tent camped there, but haven't been back since we bought our pup. They are a little pricey, no doubt. But waking up next to the sound is pretty nice. We haven't tried any of the resorts.
