Coachmen pop-ups

Is anyone familiar with the Coachmen line of PUPs? A friend has one in really nice condition for sale at $800.00. It has two queen size beds, awning and propane stove and heater. Any input welcome.

Thanks for the input. Yes, the roof as well as the rest of it is in excellent condition. My friend replaced the awning, all of the fabric, screens and inside surface and fixtures are in very good condition. There is no musty odor or evidence of dampness, and it was used very little. He had given it to his daughter to use, but she hasn't used it much at all and wanted to sell it. He has maintained it and I expressed an interest in it as the older I get the less comfortable sleeping on the ground in a backpacking tent seems like a good idea. This will provide my wife and me with a way of camping more in more comfort. Mt. Pisgah is only 8 hours away, so escaping the Florida heat and mosquitos is now possible.

I thought it was too good to be true, but as I am a newbie to this type of camping,(now an aging and former backpacker), I was not familiar with Coachmen PUPS. He had this PUP, used it for a short while, then gave it to his daughter, then had an A frame, then moved up to a 25 or 30 ft. trailer RV,(I'm not sure of the correct terms here). When he decided to sell this one I jumped at the opportunity.

Mine is new and I like it.

Both the Clipper and Viking brands are made in the factory. The model names and colors are the main difference between the 2 brands

Thanks, Dave. I am really looking forward to going up to Pisgah N.F. again and using it. Way too hot and humid here in N. Florida.

I have a 1999 Coachmen Clipper that I bought earlier this summer and I LOVE it!  It had many issues that I was not aware of when I purchased it (I drove from central Okla. to Indianapolis, Indiana on a Friday night, getting there very tired and sleepy).   The issues were not manufacturer defects, but rather from neglect from the previous owners.  Over the summer those issues have been fixed (for very little money) and now I wouldn't trade or sell this PUP for anything.  I'm not real crazy about the colors used in the PUP but I can live with them and just try to "accessorize" around them.  

DH and I recently went camping on a weekend when rain was forcasted; just some small, passing rain showers.  Well, let me tell you, on the Saturday night a storm came up and the pup did "sway" a little inside  but not excessively.  When DH and I got out during the middle of the storm to take down our "potty room" we discovered that the wind was so violent that it almost blew us over.  We looked at the PUP and it was motionless.  We could not believe it.  The rain was falling in buckets and the inside of our Coachmen was bone dry.  We later learned the wind was blowing at about 65 miles an hour and the amount of rain that fell on us was over 3 inches.  We had reserversations to camp at that same campground this weekend; The National Park Service cancelled those reservations, the park is now under water resulting from the storm that we went through in our Coachmen.  

Go For It and then go out and enjoy it all you can.

WOW! That's quite a story. I am impressed with the strength of the pup. Thanks for the info. I wish you many more great days.

Thanks to all for your input and responses. I plan to tow our Coachmen Classic,(1800 lb dry weight) with a 1992 940 Volvo wagon with a frame mounted hitch. The info on the hitch rates it's towing capacity at 3300 lbs and a tongue weight of 165 lbs. I have learned from this forum that the tongue weight should be approx. 10% of the gross weight. The coachmen is supposed to weigh less than 2,000 lbs according to the seller. I also have a 1971 F-100 Ford step-side truck with a 302 c.i. engine and only 99,000 miles. Am I safe using the Volvo or should I make modifications to it, vs, using the Ford truck given it has more power, but considerably lower gas mileage? Or, would you all recommend another tow vehicle such as a Jimmy or 6 cyl. Blazer?

I purchased a used 2005 coachmen clipper sport 106 in October of 2005.
It was my first venture into pop-ups. 2 years later I am hooked on pop-ups and I just got a new Viking 2170 st. Viking and Coachmen are twin companies. I thouroughly enjoyed my Coachmen, but when looking to upsize, there were no 1070 st around to be bought. So I went to a Viking dealer and got the same pop-up.(different colors).
In the 2 years that I used my Coachmen I had no problems. I traded it in at a dealer for 500 less than I had originally paid. So in summary I think it is a great product and don't think you should hesitate.

I hope you buy this before he changes his mind.  Any popup in any kind of decent shape for under $1000 is a great buy.
