Hi folks, must be my 20th set up this year and I noticed there was no (cranking -ratchet ) sound. The pup stayed up (coleman Taos) but it's got me wondering....any ideas?

The pawl (ratchet) may be just barely catching the teeth and not falling all the way in like it should (thus the lack of clicking sound). It could also be a week spring. That may be a dangerous situation. You may want to get under there and clean & lubricate it. Check with your manufacturer to see what they suggest as a lubricant. I use white lithium grease, some use silicone spray.

WD40 is a good cleaner but it is not a good lubricant.

The lack of clicking is a common occurrence.  Most likely you over cranked the lift system on the way down.  When lowering the roof watch it and when it quits moving down stop cranking it down.  To fix is easy.  Crank the PU roof all the way up and then give the crank a push.  You need to slightly over crank the lift system and  the pawl will reset itself.  You will feel it give.  It is only a very slight over crank, but it does take a bit of pressure to do it.  If you check your owners manual you will find this information in it.

Once the door is in place it is unlikely that the roof will come down.  My roof doesn't move unless I turn the crank handle, even when I am cranking the roof down, but I would not want to camp without the pawl engaged.:)
