Maybe not all of you are aware, but our very own DNA Dan will be running in the 26 mile Long Beach City Marathon this Sunday.  I wanted to wish him luck and  let us all know how you placed.  Just finishing a marathon is a feat in itself, but in talking to him at Mojave Narrows he wants more than just to finish.

GOOD LUCK DAN!!

Dan
  GOOD LUCK to you in the race. My Brother in law will be racing too!
Also Dan, if you want to win this race, be thinking of your wife chasing you in her car with her flame thrower attached to the hood! That will lite a fire under you to win! LOL

wavery

Good luck Dan. We'll all be pulling for ya. :sombraro:

Good luck Dan.

Brian, it is actually 26.22 miles :D

Unless you have run a marathon, you can never forget those last 0.22 miles, which are probably the best 0.22 miles of the race.
You are tired, have just spent the past three or more hours giving everything you got, and you are exhausted wishing for the pain to stop and for it to be over.
Then the number of people on the side increase,
The cheering and clapping is everywhere.
Someone might recognise you and cheer you on.
Then you see Dee and the kids proudly cheering you on, waving and clapping.
Somehow you find some extra energy and manage to increase your speed, and sprint towards the finish line holding your head up high.

What is it with you people? 26 miles, 26.22 miles, we are looking at less than a 1/4 mile difference. So sue me.

By the way, how do you spell recognize? You should have known better than to call me out Kevin........... I'll spank ya everytime! ;)

'Nuff said right there.  Not that I myself have any marathon experience, but I can't see those viking horns bobbing up and down in the pack of marathoners crossing that finish line.  He might spill his beer!  LOL

Ya know we love you, Brian!  Now please don't totally trash me!   I've kept silent on the whole spelling and grammar thing, which is totally against my nature.

How cool you guys!! I'm going to send Dan the link to this thread...so watch out DNA Dan will be on the boards and he will call out everyones spelling and grammer errors :p and tell you the whole theory behind it too ;)  Luv ya honey...

DOH!!....SPANK!!!

Here is what Dan e-mailed me

It's great to be great. Now how to manage expectations...?!
I am going for a personal record but it's a *weak* 5 hr 15 min.
Pretty good for a guy with two screws in one ankle AND a bad hip.
Did Viking know that "recognise" is the Brit variant ?

6Quigs is right in some respects about the final .22 miles...
the less-than-one decimal fools you until you realize it's a
QUARTER OF  A MILE, over 1300 feet; from our house to the corner of Kellogg.

However:
1. It's not the best, despite the crowd (usually kept back at least 100 feet)
   (never mind the adoring family at the finish, I just want to stop running);
    my PERSONAL favorite is miles 23 & 24 when you know you're going
    to finish, even if you have to crawl over the line.
2. It's where you're suddenly aware of the sheer distance you've covered;
3. It's where all the aches and pains start clamoring for attention.

I always like to PASS someone in the last .22 mile!

Way to go Dan.  Good Luck!!
