Leaking outside shower

Hi friends,

Our new to us 2001 Niagara has an outside shower. The previous owner never used it and had the hose and shower-head disconnected and stored up front. When I tried to connect it, it was impossible to get it to seal. Whenever I turned on the water, it would spray all out of the base where the hose is attached.

There seems to be some kind of gasket in it. Should I replace it? I tried teflon tape on the threads, but it was very difficult to get it in place properly and didn't help. I ended up trashing the end of the hose, because I tightened it with a wrench, just to see if it was too loose.

The questions:

1. How tight does it need to be?
2. Any options on where to order a new hose?
3. What kind of gasket should be in there?
4. There's a vacuum breaker in the spout -- is that interfering?

Thanks for any advice,

Mark

I'm no expert, trust me but I would try changing that gasket. It could have dried out over the years and just not making a good seal.

Good luck

There is a 'vacuum breaker' in it, and I don't know first hand how one would fix it.  My OS shower got a skim of ice (even though I'd pumped antifreeze through it) and popped the breaker out and for the life of me, I couldn't get it back together - finally got mad enough to disconnect the lines to the shower, remove the entire case/contents, and put a bead of super glue around the blasted vacuum breaker and re-seated it.........guess what - No Leaks inside or out of the shower/casing!

I wouldn't recommend you do the super glue thing - there is a way - I just don't know it.  I will probably replace the entire assembly early next season.  I had gotten a replacement vacuum breaker, and could see no difference between the two so re-used the old one.

Is there an o-ring on in the top of the threaded part that you attach to the nipple in the camper?  You can buy a standard shower hose to replace the camper shower hose.:)

I thought there was. I'll have to check it when I get home. Right now the camper's parked on the side of my house, and it's so narrow, you can't go down the side, so I'll have to pull it out to work on it.

The shower hose should only be hand tight.  The little gasket may become compressed, but it will probably outlast your entire PopUp.  Just try flipping it around and reinstalling it.  It should seal just fine.  The vacuum break mentioned earlier, is actually  an anti-syphon valve built into the faucet.  The faucets that Fleetwood uses are one-piece nylon welded assemblies, so there are no replaceable parts and the only way to fix a defective anti-syphon valve is to replace the faucet.

I know this because that was the only warranty issue I have ever had with my 2004 GTE Niagara, except it was the inside shower faucet's anti-syphon valve that was defective, (and replaced under warranty).  The first time I ever used it, all the water sprayed out through the base just like you experienced with your outside shower.

CW sells a nice brass shower faucet with a removable anti-syphon valve that can be replaced oin it's own.

Further investigation reveals that it is, in fact, the anti-siphon that's the problem -- the water's leaking out because something's missing. I suspect it may be a check valve ball or something like that.

Is this a decent replacement? http://www.pplmotorhomes.com/parts/rv-pumps-water/rv-shower-faucet.htm

Thanks!
