Quote from: CajunCamperI'm sure this won't be popular, but here it goes.

If I were a smoker and all the smoking rooms at a hotel were booked, I wouldn't smoke in the room just because it would make my stay more enjoyable for me. I would suck it up and either not smoke or go somewhere else to smoke.

It should be the same thing with primitive areas in campgrounds. If your in a primitive area with no electricity either suck it up and do without or go somewhere else.

I don't want to hear your generator, I don't want to hear your A/C running, I don't want to hear your music.

We have actually arrived at a few campgrounds where all the primitive sites were taken and all that was left was the sites with hook-ups. When we have chosen and I stress the word chosen to camp in a full hook-up site we have come to expect louder neighbors and we live with it, because we are with the people that can't live without all their toys. I don't go around and tell everyone to be quiet because I am in their world and I have to either suck it up or go somewhere else.

syoungblood, I'm sure you are a great guy and have a great family and are probably very mindful of your neighbors while camping, but please don't run your generator, stereo or A/C next to me in the primitive area at anytime of the day or night.

If you really need to recharge your battery, then please take your generator and your battery to another area of the park where the A/C's are running and charge it over there. I'm sure those folks won't even notice.

I'm not sure what you are referring to as "Primitive sites" but I would think that they would have "No generator rules" and it shouldn't be an issue.

Ca State CGs have "generator rules" that specifically state "generator running hours". I must assume that you are talking about a different kind of campsite because, by your definition, you would probably choose not to camp there because of the posted rules.

I actually agree with you. I would love to find CG that have "No generator" rules. I would like to have that option as well. I just haven't seen anything like that. So........I choose to camp in places that have posted generator hours and I obey those rules and expect others to do the same. I (and others) have also chosen to put extra $ into respecting the rights of others.

I actually went to one CG where a guy had a huge industrial Arc Welder/Generator (it took up the entire bed of his pick-up truck) that he ran for hours (to watch TV). He ignored my request to turn it off so I went to the camp host. He asked him to turn it off and was ignored as well. The CG host got the Rangers to come in and escort the guy out of the CG. Somewhere, there has to be a balance.

I disagree about the difference between mechanical and human noise.  I live out in the country with no neighbors for quite a distance, and camping in the popup is almost always less quiet than being at home.  The camping group singing endless gospel songs, or another group loudly laughing and guffawing while drinking, playing cards, and telling jokes, or the fighting couple (she was throwing raw eggs at her spouse and trying to lock him out of the toy hauler) or kids running amuck cursing and kicking a pop can around, can all be more annoying at times than a gently running generator. All of these noises mask the sounds of nature.

I realize that when I go to a campground there will be all kinds of people, and all kinds of noises.  If I want the peace and silence that I used to enjoy backpacking, I will have to go backpacking.  When RV (pop-up) camping, I will just have be more tolerant of others and mindful of the way I may affect others with noise or light. That tolerance means we shouldn't ban either generators nor kids, air conditioners nor gospel singers.

OK, but untrained dogs, (neither human nor mechanical, the topics my discussion,)should be left at home.

Also, the gas-powered leaf blowers.

I agree people can get out of control and that shouldn't be tolerated either. But inviting another noise maker like a generator into the mix doesn't help the matter either. To say one is worse than the other is irrelevant, because neither should be tolerated.

I'm not talking about the sounds of laughter and people going about their activities, I'm talking about excessive noise and foul language, loud music, etc.

You might want to consider taking up sailing......

It's just glorified camping but you can anchor in places where there is no one around. On some camp-outs, I wish that I were sailing again.

If all you want to do is charge a battery then I would get a solar panal! For about 1/4 of the price of a generator you could get a great solar kit with everything you need to charge the battery. As for most of the noise that is made while people are camping well who cares at least WE ARE CAMPING!!!!!!!!
