American Heritage gets good reviews at RVParkreviews.com.  And, they do not have the train noise that many other campgrounds in the area do.

(I have a membership to Outdoor World, so use that CG which is a few blocks from A.H.).

There's lots in the area to see and do:  Colonial Williamsburg, Busch Gardens, go kart track (on Rt. 60).  The campground will most likely give you the brochure with area attractions, eateries, map, etc.  There's a Wal-mart not far from the CG, and several Food Lion grocery stores (less expensive than others) on Route 60 (right hand side of road heading east towards colonial w'burg).  Lots of eateries in the area.

Have a great trip!

Unless you enjoy the roar of a train and passing cars at all hours of the day and night, stay far away from Anvil Campground. Although we have stayed there twice (for a week each time) and really like it, most people are turned off by the trains. The bathouse is excellent, and the pool is nice, not to mention the place us normally full of kids which is a plus in our book (we have an only child, so the more kids the better). The first time we went we had no idea about the train tracks that ran right beside the campground, but we stayed anyway and ended up going back. I will admit, though, I had to get a sleep-aid by the 3rd night so that I could sleep through the night. Amtrak burns the tracks up every few hours during the night.

Thanks to both of you for the responses. I Think we will take PattieAM's  choice as both of our kids are light sleepers at best! We are looking forward to the trip and if you have anymore pointers let me know.

Thanks Again!

We camped across the James River at Chippokes Plantation State Park, near Surry, Va.   If you like quiet, this was the place.  Surry is a quaint Virginia town, with vegetable stands set up in summer, and one nice restaurant.  Far removed from the over-crowded, over-priced Williamsburg campgrounds, but actually very close - to get to Jamestown/Williamsburg, you cross the bay on an auto ferry (10-minute ride).  Two ferries running all the time, so never a long wait, and the kids have a blast feeding the seagulls off the back.
P.S.  Don't pass up Busch Gardens - by far, the best amusement park we've been to.  Of course rides & attractions, but also German brew house and Irish pub for mom & dad.  Colonial Williamsburg is really neat, but very expensive. We knew our kids (7 & 5 then) wouldn't be interested in touring all the houses, so we ended up not paying admission - it was free to just walk around, take pictures, and enjoy the outside activities (you just can't enter the buildings).  We ended up having a great day there - for free.

we stay at williamsburg koa when we go. Very nice campground. People very nice and roomy sites. Had problem with the water and they came right out and fixed it. Plus its away from the main hub of traffic but close to everything.
