Hello everyone,

We have come across an opportunity to possibly get a free puppy, almost 7 weeks old. It is a Great Dane. A light tan/sandy color with charcoal grey on his head and face. We have already named him Scooby. We haven't even seen him other than a picture, but there is something that clicked and it seems right. Has anybody had a Great Dane and know anything about attitude, temperment, aggressiveness, energy level, etc...
I have heard they a re great dogs, just very large.  Any input would be great, thanks.

Jamesdad - FREE GREAT DANE ??  Is this little guy registered ?

I had Great Danes many many years ago, and it was a great time in my life. "Scooby" sounds like the Fawn type of the breed. This is the original type of the breed and still very popular. Now the good part...Danes are loyal, loving, intelligent, low energy ( as adults ), very aware of their size, very good family dogs. "However" they do think they are lap dogs. If you are looking for a guard dog you are out of luck. Danes will bark and look mean, but most are more bark than bite. They like people too much. Great with kids, everybodies kids.
The down side is their diet.  You can't feed them like your normal dog, they have too much growing to do as a puppy and then as adults you have to still watch their diet closely. Stomach problems (bloat), front leg problems (toe-out from growing too fast) and possible heart problems from poor diet are downers. If you are committed to their diet and like big lap dogs, you are golden...let me know if you need any more info....

Kevin,
First off, why you did not call me on this subject, I will never know! We know a young lady named Tricia and she has a great dane dog! He is the size of a minature pony! James has a hard enough time keeping Chloe off of him; how is going to keep a great dane off of him! Go to the SPCA and find the right dog for your family. Besides you will no doubt have to take out a small loan to feed the dog!

Kevin, my neighbor across the street has had two great danes in 13 years. The first lived for about 10 years. They are friendly, playful, loveable, etc. As pointed out above, they are not guard dogs. As for food, they do eat a lot and tend to destroy a back yard with their droppings. Good luck.

with REALLY big droppings :J

It's not the poop that destroys a yard, it's the pee ... and any dog will do it.  Females tend to be harder on lawn, though.

If you are ready for a lifetime commitment & can afford ALL that goes with any dog (Brandy cost me just over $10,000 her last year), I'd say go for it.   They'll give you unconditional love and be your best friend no matter what.

Thanks for everyone's input. We have given it some thought and have decided to go smaller for now. It would be a big responsibility and probably more than we can handle at this time.

Not to be a pessimist but ...

Little dogs can be just as expensive as big dogs.  Please, keep this in mind when you're thinking of adding to the family.

When Oreo ( the best fur companion I've ever had ) went to a better place I wanted a small dog so I went to the shelter and fell in luv with a 4 month old shepard mix..Gizmo..1 year later she's 70 Ib's and on all 4 her back is above my hip and standing she looks at my neighbor over the 6ft wall...YES small is GREAT!!! she's such a sweetheart and she just cherishes our GD and visa-versa.

We just added a 3rd fur baby to our collection.  Maxx is all of 4 lbs (12 weeks old).  I have to say of all 3 dogs, he is the biggest handful.  Now, yes he is a puppy but he is into everything.  Because he is little he fits into all of those taboo spots the other 2 stay out of.  This dog can get out of anything.   I had him penned up and when I got home from work he had gotten out and had taken over the house.  His name should be Hoodini.:D

Don't worry you will find the right pet.  It will show up when you least expect it.  Kendra found Maxx in a bush in a parking lot.  We tried to find his owner but we fell in love with him.
