Let's talk about weather

I spent 14 years living on a boat and sailing to all parts of the world. I just got used to keeping a weather eye out.

As in sailing, weather can effect our camping to the point that we may decide to cancel due to poor weather. However, I have become quite good at weather forecasting over the years and I know how to research the particular area that we intend to camp. I don't depend on the (quite generic) weather broadcasts.

We mostly beach camp and again I deal with ocean climates. I have learned that we can make the choice between camping in miserable conditions or changing our plans to something more comfortable.

Often times, we will change other plans to go camping because there is a particularly spectacular weekend, especially in the winter. Therefore, we don't feel at all bad about canceling when it will be crappy. To us, camping is about relaxing and enjoying our environment not stressing over it.

In the Northwest, if you base your camping on the weather report, you'll never leave the driveway.

When the rain does hit, it's concentrated (not watered down) family time, including board games, books, and exploration of whatever. It's twice as good as 'at home' family time and guaranteed to lower your cholesterol. :D

Personally, I think camping in bad weather is better than a nice day at home.

We camp in all kinds of crap...errr weather. But we haven't done the snow camp thing yet.

If the weather is drizzly we just add another log to the fire and get out the rain gear. If it's really raining we go under the Quickshade/tarp/big garage thing...whichever is set up. Play games, read or i get out the woodburning. We take along a smaller Weber grill, we can cook in that and also use it for heat under the cover if it's cold out. Rain or shine we are pretty much outside the camper.

The coldest I've camped is 15* night time lows, that was a ladies weekend with my SILs. We had quite the fire going, till the drinks froze in our insulated mugs.. time to go in and thaw them out and play cards.

I always tell my family and others "rain is part of camping, be prepared. If you think you going to camp and it's not going to rain a little your kidding yourself. I just hope it doesn't downpour when I'm popping up or down.

Wavery,
I think I can forecast the weather Southern California  ;) Sunny, warm. Camping weather. I do appreciate your seamanship though (and your posts). Have you ever had the opportunity to sail the Northeast Atlantic?

I sailed from South Africa direct to Annapolis, MD (7000 miles) in '96 to attend my daughter's wedding in SoCal.

After the wedding, we sailed up to Maine (for 2 months) then back down the ICW to Florida before it got cold. Maine was great except for the bugs........................... :sombraro:

Quote from: 'tiredTeacherAnother site I frequent, shared by folks who camp in all sorts of rigs, has had a great deal of angst these past months. Seems as if they can't go camping or have cancelled trips because the weather report wasn't crafted by Walt Disney.
I take the attitude that 60 per cent chance of rain means 40 per cent chance it won't, so I go. Obviously, a 90 per cent chance of rain stretched over several days will give me pause as well as a hurricane bearing down on the beach where I plan to stay.
Question: What is your "weather threshold"?
When inclement weather strikes, what do you do? (Those who stay in with their laptops and DVDs need not respond to this one.)

We go unless its a hurricane or some other horrible storm. If it rains too much we just go shopping or curl up with book, dvd, or play games until it stops. Then we enjoy Gods beautiful outdoors till it rains again....Whats a little mud??

Another thing about DVD players...  Like I've said, we have one and use it mainly to settle the kids at night and when they wake early early in the morning so they don't disturb anyone.  As far as bad weather, thought the PUP is roomy, I can't imagine my two (or the 4 of us for that matter) being able to spend an entire day inside of it watching movies.  I think we would end up killing each other (especially the boys).  My younger one doesnt' really care for TV and needs to be doing severeal other things while watching TV my older one can sit and watch TV or play his game, but they do act like many brothers and annoy the heck out of each other.  I like having the DVD since it can keep them occupied for a while when needed, but if it were an absolutely miserable day where it was wet and cold and we couldn't play outside at all, then we would certainly seek out other entertainment.  Shopping mall, local attractions, bowling etc.

Quote from: Global Mom One of the criteria that our hybridTT had to pass when we were shopping for a new camper was that there had to be enough room inside so that (in the event of inclement weather) I could put my spinning wheel inside and spin fiber ...

I'm sitting 8 feet from our first quilt.  Its a baby quilt for our new neighbor.  She's having a BABY.  We just got our Vonda's Quilt Frames today!  We are tying the quilt on a couple of tables pushed together for now.  Maybe we can put it on the new frame to finish it up this weekend.  I don't think we could set up the frame in the popie though.
