Let's see...things to do...
Thomas Jefferson declared Lake George to be the most beautiful waters he's ever seen.
(Wonder if he ever saw the Finger Lakes????)
Steamboat Company of Lake George offers lake cruises
 Prospect Mountain
 Adirondack Winery and Tasting Room
 House of Frankenstein Wax Museum
 Great Escape and Splashwater Kingdom
 Shelving Rock Falls hiking trail
 Log Jam Outlet Center
 Fort William Henry
 Magic Forest
 Several other Outlet Malls
 nearby:
Saratoga Performing Arts Center- summer home of the Philadelphia Orchestra, New York City Ballet and others
 Saratoga Race Track

We have never been to Lake George.  It's about a 5.5 hour drive for us, seems like everyone needs to drive a distance to get there.  GeneF might be the closest!

 Our vote's for Lake George.

 ANYTHING BUT PINK T SHIRTS!!!!!

Dave, Gene is moving to Florida, so he may be the furtherest!

Lake George is a over my travel distance so I would vote for a location farther south.

How far north would you be willing to travel? And would you definitely join the Rally? In the interest of input....thank you,
Cheryl
How far North would I come?  I came to the Gettysburg rally.  That's pretty far North for me.  Hi Tracy.  Still with DOC?  19 months and I'm done with them.

Cheryl

Hi Flacamper,
I remember you at the Gettysburg Rally......but......times they have changed! Would you do the same trip now?
I have been asked to search several different states for some good destinations and would really like some concrete input from Rally goers. At the last Rally - Virginia, North Carolina, and northwestern Pa. were all mentioned and now there seems to be interest in Lake George (Adirondacks) area. I am willing to research all those but most input I'm seeing from the current rally attendees is to keep the trip down to a 5 hour drive time max. from the Md./Pa. central area. My plan (or attempt at least) is to narrow down the choices of campgrounds by the start of November, to be put on the board for a vote, so that reservations can be made at the start of January. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Would I do the same trip now? Probably not. Not because of gas prices, but because I'm retiring in less than two years:-(), so I'm throwing all my "XTRA" money :yikes: towards bills. But I will see you at some later rallys. Good luck and happy camping...

Just Me

Cheryl,

Debbiedee1959 and I camped here for a week several years ago and enjoyed it.  With the job I start tomorrow, I will have summers off again.   I will be able to join you all.

Cheryl

Thank you Just Me,
We have also camped there MANY times and enjoy it thoroughly! DH likes it because he can buy his favorite drink right in the camp store! It is a really pretty area and the campground is a typical KOA style, which many on this board do not like. Sites are tight and it is a VERY busy campground. What I like is that it is right at the entrance to a great historic park and there is a lot to do in the area. We've never dealt with a KOA for a Rally (I don't think?) and I'm not sure how open they would be to holding sites and catering to a group. What do you think?

chip

I was at Harpers Ferry KOA last Friday, and have been there as an overnight a group of times over the past 11 years-one night at at time, resting up for our final bike ride to DC.

EVERY time we stop, and it is a Friday night and very busy, the staff is very helpful and will go out of their way to help.  Bathrooms very clean, but maybe  not enough(?) for the number of campers.

This link from their website re: reunions, rallies, etc.

Just my .02, FWIW.

Cheryl

I agree Chip! And, thank you for the input. The staff at Harper's Ferry are extremely nice. My DH has done their two-way radio communications
work in the past many years and we enjoy the campground while he works. What a perk. My real concern is the group's desire for quiet and a place apart from the crowd. There is no such place at Harper's Ferry. It  is a very popular, very busy, campground. We have the luxury of being there during the week and at off peak times so we get to enjoy quiet and solitude....to some degree.
Happy camping,
Cheryl

I think anything in the WV eastern panhandle or northern VA would be great.

I know that a KOA is not what we are looking for but I did find one we could discuss. Ashland Resort

Just Me

Here is another one,  Ladies we could get the royal treatment at this one
Stonewall Resort in Roanoke, West Virginia

Rocky Gap State Park, Maryland

Cheryl

Thank you Anthony and Just Me for your suggestions. We've camped before for a Rally at Rocky Gap (one of the first ones I ever organized) and everyone was okay with the campground except thoses who wanted full hookups and a pool.
Ashland Resort doesn't look like they have a pool either.
Stonewall Resort doesn't look like they have a pool and I'm not sure what level of horsepower they allow on the lake. I'm going to look into that, for those with water toys.
Keep the suggestions coming as I appreciate all the help!

Luray, VA

Front Royal

At first glance, the Front Royal campground might be the best of these three.  They have a specific link for rallys.  Full hookup sites, popup sites, cabins, swimming pool, free WiFi

Close access to Shenandoah National Park and relatively close for Anthony are plusses.  Should be a relatively short drive to Washington DC.
