I'm rebuilding my Jayco 10' PU. Poor design allowed water to get where it shouldn't have, and I had to fix a couple of rotted spots in the floor, rebuild three of the corners and both ends. Once I get the exterior back together, I'll rebuild the interior with a different floor plan and use better quality material.

Question - I was planning to cover the floor with In/Out carpet rather than vinyl. Any reason this wouldn't work? or are there other suggestions.

Thanks

I personally wouldn't want carpet other than throw rugs in my PUP.  I have only been out in mine once and in the 4 days I was gone I must have swept the floor twice a day or more just to keep it from building up too bad.  If you did carpet you would also have to lug along some kind of vacuum.

There are a few reasons why the manuf uses vinyl. First is that it is glued right to the wood on the floor and water should not be able to penetrate (as long as there are no holes). Carpet will leave a space for moisture to accumulate and mold to form.

The second was covered above....easy dirt removal.

I would go with vinyl flooring.  Carpet is too hard to keep clean.:)

if you really, really feel you must have carpet - put down a cheap vinyl floor and cut a piece of carpet to the shape of the floor exposed by the cabinets - leave it loose - so you can pick it up and take it outside to shake or beat it, hang it up to dry and air if need be.

Make sure that your cabinet doors will still open over the carpet!

A good choice might be one of these rubber-backed carpets/ rugs that are meant to be trimmed to size  for a bathroom? you could even toss it in the wash if you needed to.

Carpet is really messy in a camper - mine had carpet in it - it was really disgusting - damp, smelly and filthy.  it was the FIRST thing I removed in repairing my Starcraft!

I used vinyl wood flooring. It worked great in laying and is easy to clean.

I got it at Home Depot. It comes in planks and interlocks with a strong adhesive.

Thanks for the input. Sounds like vinyl is the way to go.

Nice job but that's not "Vinyl" as is traditionally referred to as "Linoleum". That is "Laminate" flooring (I believe, please correct me if I'm wrong).

Laminate flooring has it's own issues. It expands and contracts a lot. On a hot humid day, it may expand enough to buckle on the floor if it doesn't have enough expansion gap on the sides. You can resolve that issue by gluing it down. However, the bigger issue with laminate is that you must keep it dry. It it get moisture in it, it will wrinkle up and eventually fall apart.

I've installed laminate flooring in 22 of our 40-unit apt building. Whenever there is a water spill or some sort of over-flow problem, we have to change the laminate floor. It's not fun the second time around.

If you can give it expansion space and keep it dry, it's great. I wouldn't suggest gluing it down because you may have to replace it.

wavery, it is not laminate, its vinyl.....although it looks like a laminate. Its Trafficmaster Allure vinyl flooring.

Here's some links to read about it...I think its the way to go if you want the wood look.....

Here's a pic of it... note the black edge, thats the interlocking adhesive which holds the planks together. This is some strong stuff, once you stick them, its real hard to separate them again. So when laying, make sure you have them butted up tight at each seam.

We enjoy having carpeting for the warmth in the off season and for dampening sound.  We currently use a couple of rubber-backed throw rugs.

I haven't had any problems with keeping carpet clean, but we have no young children and don't even wear shoes into the camper.  No water/mildew problems because we don't have a shower in the camper.

I think the ideal situation (certainly not the cheapest) would to use a quality sheet vinyl as sugessted, and then have a local custom rug binder who does the sewing binding (not the hot-glue gun type of binding) to make a full-size custom fit carpeting that could quickly be taken out for shaking or a good vacuuming on the garage floor.  They charge for the binding by the foot.  I would use a high quality dense carpeting instead of indoor-outdoor carpeting.

o track anything in. No moisture/mildew, etc., because we
