I regularly flip through my camping photos on smugmug and lurk regularly here in the forum. I'm suffering through the dog days of no camping.

To top it off, business is slow and instead of doing paperwork, I've finally been playing with some of the video I've been taking at our camping trips. I'm the guy who takes a lot of photos and videos and gets all the 'Oh no, not again' looks, and sometimes that objective finger pops up in my direction. Oh well, somebody has to do it.

Anyway, I've upgraded my smugmug site so I can upload tons of video, started learning to use my Pinnacle software and finally put some of the video together.

Below is a link to one of them. Please check it out and let me know what you think. You're welcome to view the others if you're interested. They're all there in the same area. I have enough video from this 1, 7 day trip to Detroit Lake in Oregon, to make another 30 or so short videos. Don't think I'll quite go that far but you never know.

When you get to the page, just press the play button on the right.

:book: Thanks for looking. It sure makes me want to go camping. Hope it does you too.

BTW: We had 3 full families plus several extra kids. We had 4 campsites, my E3, 5 tents, a boat, 2 Jet Skis, and several inflatable thing-a-ma-bobs.

Great videos!  And what a great campsite.  I like the way you shot that:  everywhere you turn the camera there's something interesting to look at, including the basset hound sleeping on the ground. :D

And you're right;  it makes me want to take out a ski doo and practice barrel rolls. ;)

Is that Mt Jefferson in the background?  Beautiful area and a great campsite.

Thanks for sharing

Thanks Weathertop. Appreciate you taking the time to look! Glad you enjoyed em. My wife gets a little tired of me watching the one where she and her friend roll the sea doo. I just can't get enough of that one... :sombraro:

Barrell Rolls? You're way more ambitious than we are. Edit: Oh I get it... :p

I believe that's Mt Jefferson. That's what I've been told. It is a beautiful area. We're gonna try someplace different this year but I know it will be tough to match what our cozy little spot at Detroit Lake has offerred the last few years.

Thanks again,

Wayne,
What kind of player does it take? I've tried several times and they won't play on my computer.

Hey Ron,
Nothing special is required. Smugmug takes care of providing/starting the needed player when you press play. However, there can be complications. While checking the support site, this complaint brought the following response from the support guru...

Support Guy says:
Some things to check:

Check to make sure Flash is installed.

Check for anything that would block Flash. ie Adblocker or FlashBlocker plugins in Firefox. For IE, check the security settings to make sure they are not set too high. Above Medium you might have trouble. You might want to add *.smugmug.com to the trusted sites list.

Try a different browser to see if it is a browser or security related problem.

Go to the SmugMug homepage and see if the slideshow plays. Right click on it and check the settings in Flash to see if you are allowing local storage of content.

End of Support Guy says:

Let me know if any of this helps. I have also read somewhere that Realplayer can hijack videos so they won't play with other players.

Anyone else having problems viewing the videos?

I don't know what my problem is. I went to SmugMug's video page, and the video played fine. The ones on your page won't, for some reason. I did just upgrade to IE7 (I'm way behind the times, I know), but other videos seem to play OK.

How far do you get? Are you able to press the 'Play' button? and then what happens? Does the viewer window load?

Give me a little more info and I'll try to track it down with tech support.  :compumad:

Anyone else out there have any ideas? Any help is appreciated.

I couldn't see your show I could get to the site and press the play arrow then it would just sit there.  The slide bar on bottom showed it was playing but the picture was not moving.  I have a Mac would this make a difference?  Carol

Hi Carol,
As far as I know, the vidoes should play just fine on a Mac. I do know that there are some differences but typically the systems take care of it just fine.

Did you try pressing the play arrow at the bottom of the viewer again? Normally, once you press Play the first time, the viewer loads and the video will begin shortly but I have read that depending on the internet connection, some folks have to press the Play button, again, at the bottom of the viewer.

Wish I could be more helpful.

Wayne,
I don't know what is going on with it. I get the still picture on the right of the screen with the "play" arrow. When I click that, the screen changes to this:

and nothing more happens. It's probably me :D

One last thing Ron,

When you 'mouse over' the bottom of the black box, a set of DVD type controls should appear with another Play button. Did you try pressing this 2nd Play button also?

If not try that and let me know...Sadly, I'll have to admit, the videos aren't worth all your effort.  :eyecrazy:  Thanks for trying though.

Nothing happens when I mouse over. A right click on the black square gives me some Flash settings choices, but nothing I change there does any good. I tried downloading one of the videos, and see that it was saved as a mp4, and nothing I had on my computer offered to play an mp4, so maybe that's the issue.

I've enjoyed your pictures enough to discount this last statement. As I have time, I'll play around with the mp4 thing and see what I can find out.

waygard33

One last thing to try Ron. Below is a link that goes straight to an open movie box and the movie just plays automatically. We'll probably get the same results but who knows.

For background, I upload an mpeg2 file to smugmug. My understanding is they convert it to H.264 (or something like that) and then it arrives at your PC as a flash movie. I think the macs actually use QuickTime to display it because the flash doesn't work so well but that's supposed to change in the next OS I think.

Anyway, I'll quit beating this dead horse.

EDIT: Further research with smugmug support shows that the overwhelming reason for the videos not playing is due to an older version of the flash player.
If you're brave, upgrades can be found here:

I haven't had the chance to try it again but will give it another try.  I can get the slide show just not the vidoes to play.....Love your pic's and looks like a pretty part of our country.

Wayne I just tried to play the vidoes on my pc and they work fine so maybe it's something with the settings on my mac.  I did enjoy them the music and all is great.  we are going camping this Thur-Tue can hardly wait.......We need this Camp out badly........carol
