"Turtling" Options Along the 101

Dee is conveniently forgetting that we were up hours before her and rode our bikes about 20 miles Saturday.

Didn't do any bragging Friday and Marcy will back me up on that.

I don't know of any rest areas along the 101 or I5 that aren't posted "No Overnight Parking." I've seen some where they have a maximum stay limited posted of only a couple of hours.

Every other year (this is our 13th GWBR) we've made the drive in one straight shot, stopping only to stretch our legs once or twice. This year we are leaving around 9pm Wednesday night. If we drove straight through we'd arrive at the Paso Robles fairgrounds before we are allowed on them at 8am Thursday morning. We want to leave Wednesday to miss the LA traffic. We want to be in Paso Robles Thursday morning, set up camp, and be on our bikes riding by noon.   Hence the need to park overnight somewhere.

So far the Sam's Club that Brad/Mary recommended looks like a good possibility. I'm waiting the hear back from the manager. I'm trying to avoid paying for a site in any traditional campground, regardless of the cost, since we will arrive around midnight, be gone by 6am, won't use any hookups or other facilities, probably won't even put the slide out.

Thank you to everyone that has posted with your suggestions. They are all very much appreciated.

Hi,

You can stay at my house.  I live in Oxnard, a few miles from Highway 101.  I was the lady camped next door to you in Newport Dunes that spoke with you about going to Paso Robles.

Thanks, Glenna. We appreciate that and we may take you up on your offer. The issue is, we probably wouldn't roll into Oxnard until around Midnight and we would be back on the road around 6am. At those hours I don't want to risk waking anyone, either you or your neighbors. So I was kind of concentrating on retail locations where pulling in at midnight wouldn't wake anyone. But I'll definitely keep your offer in mind.

As for GWBR, are you still thinking of going? Check out the rally website for more details. Plus you can register on-line.

Hey everybody,

Thank you for the offers of the curb in front of your home and ideas on places to stay. And Dee, thanks for raggin' on me. Let's me know you care.

Being a member of the Elks, I'm not sure why it didn't occur to me earlier to check the lodges in the area. For those of you that are not familiar with the Elks, most lodges have areas set aside for RV parking. Many offer full hookups for $10-15 a night. This is offered to members only as a benefit of membership. Because all I want to do is park, no hookups, I can stay at the Ventura lodge for a nominal donation to the lodge, on private property, in a lit parking lot, with no chance of early morning truck deliveries or other interruptions.

The lodge I belong to usually has 2 or 3 RVs parked in the lot (full hookups) most nights. If you think you may want an alternative to Wal-Marts on your next cross country trip, look into the Elks. Plus you can have dinner and enjoy the lounge at the lodge during your stay.
Of course, they do many other worthwhile works as well. PM me or visit //www.Elks.org if you want more info.

Thanks again for all the offers and input.

There is an Elks Lodge with Rv parking in Santa Barbara also. Not to far off the 101

All this talk about Elks lodges makes me think of Homer Simpson and the Stonecutters epsiode. I always thought thier motto could be well adapted for SCCampers:

"The Sacred Order of the SCCampers has, since ancient times, split the rocks of ignorance that obscure the light of knowledge and truth... now let

I'm pretty sure this is Brian in his Elks uniform:

I think I prefer this depiction. Fred is obviously having more fun than your example.

JohnandLeann

There is also an Elks Lodge in Santa Maria.  You can see it from the freeway and on Friday nights they have cook your own steaks, seafood, chicken cooked over oak coals.

Yes, your post also made me think of Fred and the Loyal Order of Water Buffalo. So does that make you the Grand Poobah? ;)
