It was suggested that a new thread should be started for ideas and suggestions for next summer's Nor Cal/So Cal meet.

I just got off of the phone with a friend that suggested The Rock Creek area near Mammoth.  I started googling and came up with this:

http://www.rockcreeklake.com/camping/

Check it out.  Maybe if someone was going up that way in a few weeks they might be able to possibly check into this area for the rest of us and give a report on it.

Happy Camping :tent:

We love Bridgeport but it is a good 10 hour drive towing a trailer from Southern California. There is a campground there with hookups at the Lower Twin Lake. I can check into it when we get there in a few weeks. Annette's Mono Village is nice also. Lots of shade and not far from the Upper Twin Lake. Annette's is also large enough that a rally would be easy there. They also have cabins you can rent so if you think it is too far to tow you could stay in a cabin. Unfortunately, it looks like they don't take reservations. maybe for a group they might

Unfortunately, most of Bridgeport's campgrounds are National Forest cg's which you have to reserve on Reserve America.

Found another site

Maybe I need to look up Bridgeport and see exactly where it is.  I have been to Mammoth but it was many years ago.

http://www.morrodunes.com/ Don't really know much about this park other than it is right at the beach behind Morro Rock.  Might be an option.  I do know someone that stayed here several years ago that I will talk to and report back.

there has to be something closer...and isn't the elevation there high....long drive + big hills = Big $$$$ not to mention some TV's it's too hard on..still voting for Morro bay area.

not sure I can handle a 10 hr drive and THEN set up camp. It took me just over 9 to get back from Santa cruz and I collapsed when I came home and the next day was completely worthless..

It looks like our prefered campground for a Rally is an RV type park, with full hookups and the sites close together.
Here is an interesting list, with clickable links of all the RV parks in California, and it looks like all the ones we have stayed at are on the list.

I agree with having it somewhere in the middle, such as Morro Bay, Pismo or Paso Robles.
Unfortunately, for most campgrounds, this is right in their busy season, and they are already going to be booked up for every weekend in the summer, so there is no big advantage to them for having us.

I sent an email to Morro Dunes tonight-  The web site does not work- ask them to send me information and pictures about the place. The reviews look good- I will ask my daughter who lives in Santa Maria, if they have been here.

I have been searching and reading website after website.  I am surprised by the number of Campground/RV Parks that don't or can't allow campfires.  There were several possibilities in the redwoods, even further down in the Big Sur area, but most of them are smaller campgrounds and would not be able to accomodate a group of our size.  Others had mostly full and/or long timers and only a few sites for short time campers.

One that would easily accomodate us was like a parking lot, crammed in. It had one nice area on grass under tall trees, but only 18 sites. HOWEVER, this campground has a larger area that would easily accomodate our size and it is set away from the main RV park area and noise would not be an issue.  But because of the annual Rennaissance Faire hat takes place in August a rally would have to be in June to mid July. The campground is "Casa de Fruta".  There is a large green/grassy area ringed in trees that is away from the concrete area.  The used to be a baseball diamond.  In the ring of trees are water/electric sites, about 40 or more.

Another camground to investigate is Garlic Farm RV Park in Gilroy, CA.  This is a very nice campground, about 35 minutes to Santa Cruz. The Garlic Festival is the week July 23-25, 2010.  Since this is a busy weekend with a festival they are more lax on the quiet hours. We would not be able to have campfires at our individual sites but would be able to have a group campfire in the pool/group area. There site price is $37.00 and with a group of more than 15 is 20% off. There is not an additional charge for extra people or pets.  You get 1/2 hour of free wifi per day (check out those e-mails) otherwise, she thinks (will check out for sure if many are interested) is approx $6.00 per day.  They are very KID friendly. :)   Please be sure to checkout the RV Clubs Page.

Let me know what ya'll think.

Oakhurst area has a couple of campgrounds near by as well as the lake itself.  Camping around the lake might be a little rough a group our size due to noise concerns.  It about 4 hour or so drive from Santa Maria to there.

Have not been to Morro Dunes yet I don't think.  I might want to investigate further in the near future if there is interest on this one.

JohnandLeann

I think Morro Bay has a group site area.  I will check into it further and report back.

JohnandLeann

Morro Bay has two group sites but only allow 25 persons and max veh length of 18ft  and 35 persons with max length of 36 ft.  Don't know if getting both group sites together would work or not.

Have you looked at Morro Dunes on Google Maps.
It looks like it is all concrete with only a couple of trees.
It is right beside the beach, which is nice, and the sites are in a circle with no boundary between you and your neighbour.
I would like to hear from someone who has actually stayed there.

The group sites at Morro Bay State Park are for tent camping, so would not have hook ups or parking for our popups, trailers and RV's. Otherwise it looked nice, well away from the other campers so we would not be bothered by their noise!!
