I first saw curling many moons ago when ESPN was first getting started and they were showing anything they could to fillup airtime. I did watch a bit of it during these Olympics and began to wonder about how and when the game got it's start. Sure I could do a Google search, but I thought I would ask some of my friends on this site in the north that may have the answers. I'm sure the answers here will be more fun than Google anyway.

My thought was that the game started in either Mich., Wis. or Minn. on a frozen lake when a bunch of ice fisherman were having no luck with the fishing and so they invented this game to kill time. I figure there was lots of beer involved and perhaps a bit of gambling.

Would love to hear the real story, or even funny made up stories.

Apparently it is growing in popularity.  I believe we even have several clubs in the Dayton, Ohio area.  I can see it as a variation of shuffleboard or bocce on ice, but I want to know who came up with the idea to use brooms, and does it really do anything?  I think that getting "stoned" in Canada means something a whole lot different than it does in the states.
