Gamecock CamperMy lantern lives in the trunk of the PU.  It is kept standing up at all times.  I used to have to replace the mantles a couple of times a year.  I use the heavy duty mantles now and they last a couple of years.  Wal-Mart has the heavy duty ones where we live.[:)]

Gamecock CamperI use the heavy duty mantles also and although they haven t last me 5-6 years, they do last longer than the regular ones.  I don t have a case for my 20+ year old Coleman lantern but I do keep it stored upright on top of my bunk end covers in the dinette seat.  Maybe that cushions it enough.

Gamecock CamperWhen I was in Boy Scouts, there was one leader who insisted on storing the lanterns upside down to protect the mantles.  I wouldn t take this guy s advice, because he occasioanlly spilled Coleman fuel all over our gear doing this. (Which is worse, a brken mantle, or a gasoline soaked tent?)

We now have a propane lantern that uses the double-ended mantles (the ones that connect at both the top and the bottom).  They last forever.  I replaced one last year because it had a tiny crack in it after about two years.

Gamecock CamperThe mantles on mine are at least 5 or 6 years old now, altough I don t use the lantern every time I camp, the lantern has been riding in the storage box on my camper for years and I don t remember replacing the mantle since I bought the camper. My lantern came with a hard plastic carring case that it is stored in and it is packed in an inside corner of the storage box where it cannot move around during travel. I also use the Coleman heavy duty mantles, have since my tenting days.

Gamecock CamperI m still looking for HEAVY DUTY mantles.  I have not seen any yet, so.... does anyone know where to get them?  I ve been to Wally World and Target so far.
