Just purchased a 97 Palamino w/o air.  I have looked at a portable air conditioner that vents through a hose.  Has anyone had any experience with using a portable air conditioner in a pop up?  While scanning ebay, I noticed swamp coolers being fairly cheep.  I don't know squat about swamp coolers.  Would that be a viable option?

Thanks

I here tell they work pretty good in hot, dry climates (maybe those out Calllyie fornia way would know for sure). Here, in the hot humid east, no way, Jose.

In most of Southern, Central, and Northern Califiornia it's usually not dry enough to use a swamp cooler, (except if you happen to live in the desert areas of the state).

A swamp cooler only works when the ambient humidity is less than 80%, (because that's what the swamp cooler produces and blows back into the air where it's used).

I personally would not use a swamp cooler in a PU.

IMHO, there is too much risk of moisture intrusion and mold.

Like others have said, swamp coolers require low humidity.  Here in Minnesota, they don't even sell them because they just would not work.

Like I said, I don't know anything about swamp coolers.  It sounds as if it would not be an option here in Missouri, that would be why I have never seen one.

Does anyone have an opinion on the portable air conditioners?  they have them at Home Depot for about $300.

Thanks for your help

A/C prices are lower in Wal-Mart.   I've seen many people use box a/cs to blow air into their tents.  Don't see why it wouldn't work in the popup.

You would need a table of sorts and a shroud (fabric) to seal off the gap.

Like the others have said, it is all about the humidity.  If you camp in an arid area they would work great.  We used a swamp cooler at the house in Mesa, AZ, and it worked great until the monsoon season, when the humidity was much higher.  The nice thing about swamp coolers is that they are simple and cheap to operate, but will need a water supply connection or self-contained water tank.

I bought one of those that fits on a regular cooler, you fill it with ice and the fan blows over the ice producing cold air. Yes, it was humid and about 90 degrees outside and we were camped in the shade. This did not work AT ALL. I don't see where it would even work in dry climates. You could not feel cold air coming out, and the fan was working fine and I had it set up according to directions. Paid $39 for it, sent it back to the mfr. and got a quick refund, thank goodness  :-()

I installed a 5000btu Window AC unit in my pop-up.

It wasn't hard to do, after I got past the fabrication process.

Here's a link to it. Hope it helps, and if you have any ?? I'll try to help.

Nice install by fairweathercamper!

5000 btu AC units should be available from WalMart for under $100.

Hey, we just bought a factory reconditioned Duo-therm 13,500 BTU top unit including a brand new inside control panel for our pup. It comes with a full factory warranty like a new one. It was $350. The seller also sells them on ebay, and starts out at $300, and I have seen a few go for that. We paid the $350 because that was his buy it now price on ebay and at the time he had none for sale on ebay. The downfall is he does not ship them, and he is located in Elkhart, Indiana which is in the NE corner. Some friends of ours purchased one too and a driver where she works makes a trip up there every couple of weeks, so we lucked out there, no gas to buy or long drive (we're about 5 hrs. from there). If you know of anyone that might be going that way, that would be just as cheap as a portable and a lot more convenient. BUT my DH and his buddy still have to install them! :p  SO we'll see how that goes, they are pretty handy at that kind of stuff and are going to do both in one day and help each other out. I told the "buddy" that his pup was getting cut on first, LOL!  :D
