Suggestions for Portable fire pit?

We have camped at a few places that allow fires, but don't have fire pits, OR rent the fire fits per day.  I was looking to get our own fire pit to take with us if we needed it.

Does anyone have any suggestions for CHEAP and good firepits.  Where to buy, what to buy?  Epay?  Craigslist?

I bought a coleman portable bbq/firepit from camping world for about 79.00.  It cost a little more than I'd like but I seem to always be cooking for a large group and never have a enough room on the bbq.  what I like about this one is It has a large surface for cooking then when your done just take off the grate and add your wood it comes with a case and a screen metal top, sort of a spark arrestor if you will.  If you want a great and cheap pit, get a old washing machine tub, with the holes in the tub it vents great and being heavy gauge steel it also gives off a lot of heat.  And buy the way, my coleman works great I think it's even approved to use even when you cant have wood fires because it's a bbq, just use charcoal instead of wood.

You could get a hold of a 33 or 55 gal drum and cut it down to about 6" high and punch/cut a few vent holes in the sides near the bottom. Not exactly compact or easy to cut unless you have the right tool/friends with tools.
It is an option tho.

When we went to a beach campground, we bought a galvanized steel tub from Walmart - about $15.  Going back to that campground this year and bringing our tub - it looks brand new, since it has only had 2 campfires in it so far.  I believe it's good for many more.

I wouldn't use anything galvanized, as burning (or welding, grinding, or cutting) of galvanized steel can release toxic fumes.  While in the outdoors enjoying a campfire, it is unlikely to notice any effects, I wouldn't want to cook hot dogs over it.  http://files.aws.org/technical/facts/FACT-25.PDF

check craigslist..I found one but it had already sold, but people list stuff there all the time just to get rid of it

That's how I sold alot of the big baby stuff and little tykes stuff. I made enough for 4 tickets to disneyland and had $40 spending money :-()

I have an old dryer drum that I was going to use to make my own fire pit. But a friend of ours bought us a store type one. So you can have it if you want. You just need to make some legs for it.

Thanks I have thought of that but I think its a little bigger than I want to carry around...

I noticed most of the posters are from Cali. You have problems with fires I know. Must suck not to have campfires. And when you can you have to bring your own. I was thinking you could use a fire pit type you'd use at home. It is bulky and takes up room for trips. Here in wisconsin we don't have that problem. But some camp grounds have crappy fire pits. I made note of this and if I go back to those I'm bringing my fire pit from home. (how do you put that info on the bottom so I don't have to type it each time?)

I use the top of a commercial bulk propane tank that was being thrown out by a local dealer. Used to cover the valve on top of the bulk tank.  It's about 18" across and 10" deep. It's about an 1/8" thick steel. We've been using it for about 12 yrs with at least 10-20 fires in it a year. Maybe your local propane dealer has one to get rid of too.

not bad, might be too far to drive, plus I have my eye on a couple on ebay for the same price new.  One is a coleman that doubles as a BBQ
