I was dropping off some stuff at Goodwill earlier today, When the guy in the pickup in front of me opened his tailgate I saw a box of what looked like pie irons turned over on its side. when he tried to pick up the box it ripped and several fell. I got out to help him and confirmed what they were, plus a couple Dutch ovens. I offered him $20 for the box and he accepted. A couple are in good condition but the others need to be reconditioned. There were 8 cast iron pie irons, 2 aluminum ones, two medium sized dutch ovens and a bunch of tent stakes and misc cooking utensils.

Indeed, now I need to figure out how to restore them. I think I will just chuck one of the aluminum ones, it's beyond hope. I know there is a method for restoring cast iron, I remember an article in PopUp Times a while back had something to do with restoration, I just can't find it.

The aluminum ones are hard to restore since they tend to have pits in the aluminum. For cast iron I give it a good wash and dry, then heat it up in the oven. Rub shortening on it and let it heat for a while. Leave them sit to cool then wipe out the excess oil. Some pie irons have threaded rods so you can pull the handle off to clean the iron.

I searched through my folder of back issues, there were a few issues where many files were missing, and one issue is completely missing, no files whatsoever. The issue I was looking for didn't have any of the working files and the only PDFs I have where the file that was sent to the printer so it has all the printer marks. I second PDF was similar but had the cover, contents page and the restoration article I believe you were looking for.

It was so good to see an issue of Pop Up Times magazine again, even if it was just a piece of it. I really miss having that mag come every so often. I'd usually read it cover to cover the day it arrived.
Nice to see the article from Rae too.
