iwantapopupSorry to hear that. I leave mine in all the time and after a total of 20+ years towing never had a problem. Oh, I don t have a locking hitch pin either.

QuoteI hate it when that happens. Mine was stolen few years ago from inside my job box when I was working in the city..used a crowbar to pry it open. They did it a few days before we were suppose to go camping also. I got a new one for $45, and now keep it inside the truck under the back seat, and it s only on when it s attached to the camper. As far as the neighborhood thing goes...no where is safe now a days, and it seems like you always have to take preventive measures no matter what you do so you re not a victem.

I wouldn t leave it under the seat either. In an emergency situation, that bar will come flying forward. Even if it s on the floor. I did that and when I had to hit the brakes, the bar slid forward and hit the gas pedal. No damage was done, but I couldn t figure out why I was lurching forward with my foot hard on the brake. I keep mine in the trunk of the PU. I have another bar that I use for any other trailers.

iwantapopupThat is too bad about your hitch.  A while ago I saw a real cool cover, it was a big mouth bass, I loved it!  My first reaction was, someone s gonna steal it![&:]

It really is unfortunate we have to fork out money to buy a hitch lock.

QuoteTake a hot wire from your trailer harness and hook it up to the drawbar. Next time that sucker tries to steal it you ll hear the screaming.

I liked this idea until Rednek said you d probably get sued by the buglar for the pain etc.

Thanks everyone for feeling our pain and the great suggestions.  I m going to check out the locks, even though Tim is ready to weld it to the van!

iwantapopupWow! Sorry to hear about that!

iwantapopupWhen someone stole the hitch. They didn t just take the slide but the whole hitch. They unbolted it from the van. I just had it bolted to the van. I was going to weld it on but thought if i had to remove it for some reason i would have to cut the welds off. So i didn t weld it on also. When i put the new one on i am welding it on. The locking pin would t have made a differance.

QuoteWe got into the habit years ago of removing the drawbar after spending a Saturday afternoon trying to hammer out a drawbar that had overwintered several years and was a mass of rust. I guess we should have know better being from the snow/rust belt. FIL (I m glad it was his truck not mine) finally got it out by chaining the ball to a large tree and leaving 20 foot of slack dropped the clutch. It took three hits to get it loose.

Sounds like my hitch....  But I have no reason to take it out, so it just stays there.  I like the tree idea though.

iwantapopupI live in a low crime, somewhat rural area and I still take the draw bar out when I am not using it.  When I got the class 3 installed it was the first thing they told me.  I guess it is not that uncommon for people to remove the pin and steal the bar and hitch.
