You are paying them money, tell those monkeys to come down and fix everything to your satisfaction or you go with another provider !

I beg to differ with calstate360.  We were told to put a filter on every line BUT the computer.  That the extra noise is like a fax machine's noises for the DSL modem.  You need that "noise" for the computer, but not for the phones.  Course, if you got extra filters like I did when I signed up, it certainly can't hurt to try it out first.

I suppose it depends on the provider. I use SBC Yahoo and was told to filter anything that was hooked up to the jack.

I have Verizon DSL and love it! And I have filters on all the lines connected to phones but not to the computer. No problem using the phone or with my voice mail.

Adelphia was not yet offering cable modems in our area when I got DSL. They're available now but apparently there are problems. A coworker from a nearby town where DSL is not yet available got a cable modem. He's had a ton of trouble with it and is about ready to switch back to dial up!

Hmm...my DSL came with a DIY install kit. The instructions are still lying here by the computer and it definitely shows filters on all lines going to phones but NOT the one going to the computer. Besides the phone line doesn't go to the computer...it goes to the DSL modem. The modem is connected to the computer with an Ethernet cable/connection.

I have SBC yahoo dsl.   I'm not terribly impressed with it.   It isn't much faster than the old dial up that I had before.   But, just wanted to mention that I also did the deal where they sent the equipment and I installed it myself.  My instructions were that a filter had to be placed on every phone line.  The computer plugs into the  modem thingy and then the modem is plugged into the phone jack, with a filter.   So, I guess it just depends on what service you have.  When I got this, the deal was that if I installed it myself, I wouldn't have to pay the whole price for the equipment.  I think it was $50, and I had to sign up for a year.  My monthly fee is $29.95, for this year.  I'm waiting to see, in Aug. what happens to that monthly fee, and if it goes up, I'll cancel and go to another server.  But will the modem work with someone elses service?!   That will be the big question.   I won't be surprised to hear, like with a cell phone, that the modem will be no good if I want to switch to another company.

Nope. I also have SBC Global, and have re-installed the programing many times (don't ask) The computer is not supposed be filtered at all, but any other "appliance" fax/phone/ans.mac ect.. must be filtered.  Also, if you have 2 lines you do not have to filter the second line that does not have the DSL modem on it.

Localy the ADSL provider is Verizon. We've had at least 12 families hook up through them. Not one runs anywhere near the stated maximums no matter what the distance from the "office". My inlaws and several other families in Florida all had Bell South and similar speeds.

My DW before we got married talked me into trying a cable modem. Unlike ADSL service my cable connection is the same speed both up and downloading, it's $15 a month cheaper  and have they have upgraded the local service area to over 1.2 meg consistant speeds.
Now everyone up here has pulled the ADSL and went to cable. We got the in laws to switch when the service became available and yes they had problems for about a month but the provider bent over backwards, to the point of rewiring a mile of cable to get a clear signal to their condo. There's only one of the families left down south on ADSL service and that's because they live where there's no cable.
I love Time Warner & Road Runner.

Now I'm really confused.   I've had to reinstall my DSL more than once as well, using the cd that came with the package.  And that's a whole 'nother question, why would we have to reinstall so often, or call SBC to get bulletins telling us what parts of the country can't get logged in today?  Anyway.   My instructions for my SBCglobal DSL (Yahoo) say very clearly that every phone jack in the house (that has a phone plugged into it) needs a filter.  And, I just went to check, to make sure that I know that what I am saying is correct, and the jack that our modem plugs into has a 'double' filter, one side for the modem, and one side for the phone cord.    So, the modem to the computer is filtered as well.   Could there be some different yahoo DSL services or something?  Why would we all have such very different ideas about what we're doing here?   I do know that I'm not all that happy with this servie, can't wait til aug. when my year ends so that I can shop for something different.

You don't have to use their software, your computer can find the connection without it. My speeds are just as fast as Comcast which I had before. Of course I tweaked my computer for high speed access, and it's nothing special just a P3.
You can go to.
http://www.dslreports.com/stest
You will be able to compare your speeds with others in your zip code, and get recommendations for any changes to your system with easy instructions to apply them.
Hope that helps.
