High Speed Internet Connection

At home, we used to have dial-up connection with a 2nd line dedicated to the internet.  I was very happy as the 2nd line did come in handy sometimes, I used it when I needed to get the DD's up as it was not connected to voice mail, so I would let it ring till it woke them up.

Well, DH decided that we needed high speed as it would allow several on line at once.  So we canceled the second line and got "zoomtown" and it costs us and additional $30 per month than it did with the second line and since then, we have had nothing but trouble with our voice mail and call waiting.  We have what they call "complete connections", which gives us all the whistles and bells (voice mail, call waiting, caller ID, etc).

They say we did something new like put in a new phone, but we have not changed anything.

Sometimes the calls go straight to voice mail and not even ring at the house and sometimes it doesn't even give us a blinking light saying we have voice mail, sometimes when you call and someone is on the line, it doesn't even beep (so call waiting doesn't always work), All this is intermitent.

SO.......
Just want to get everyone's opinion on what they have tried, liked, disliked, priced, etc for high speed internet connections.

We do not have cable, we have Dish Network satelite.

what is zoom town?  is it cable/dsl or what?  My parents have cable/dsl internet, regular land line for the phone (obviously), and Dish Network satellite.  Theirs works great.  Personally I go with directv for satellite, much better.  Plus you can get direcway which is a satellite dish that gives you all your chanels plus high speed internet.  It's great!

Zoomtown is thru the phone company.

I have a couple friends who's ISP is the same as their phone provider and they have problems as well.  Call em up and complain I guess

Been there, down that (don't have nor do I want the T-shirt) and all they tell us is we put in a new phone somewhere in the house and it is defective and causing the problems.  We have not installed a new phone in 1 1/2 year (christmas 2002).

This is why I'm trying to get info on other services.  DH tells me that some say they are high speed, but something about they compress stuff to cause high speed. :( (beats me)

I've got Verizon DSL in my home and have no problems with my regular phone service.  Did you connect the filters to all the phone jacks that use regular phones and not on the jack for the computer?

birol

Don't know anything about DSL connections, sorry can't help. Shouldn't the people who sell the the connection come and get it working  ?

Our main phone did have a filter on it as we get a loud squeeling noise when you answer that phone, so DH took that off, but not much improvement, and we can't answer that phone without loosing our hearing.

According to them, it is working, and yes our internet is working, but our phone service now s^cks.

I have to say, I would have some Manager PERSONALLY handling all of this, but then again, SOME people think I'm a B#^&*!  I do have a friend that couldn't get her DSL working even though they told her it should.  She ditched the DSL and her Direct TV for Cable and a cable modem.

Sounds like you need to find another provider for a high speed line.  Does Dish provide anything like Direct TV?

With DSL you MUST have a filter on EVERY jack that has a phone or computer connected to it.

Yep.. You must have a filter.. It is not for the phone, but for the Computer.. Something along the lines of back feeding to the modem. I had prroblems when I installed a new fax/printer in my home office, I ended up having to put 2 filters inline before the fax to solve problems.

Other than that, Yes I have more noise, but that has been here since we bought the house. My wires are all new (from the street and phone box all the way to my office)  But, I love the high speed DSL. I really have to have it for work as I must upload 10-20 megs of photos and control a computer server 40 miles away from my house. I do still have a back up dial-up line (must have for me) Our DSL was out Monday & Tuesday for some major server problem with sbcglobal (our provider) and it really stunk.

Are you sure you have DSL, and not one of those "high speed dial-ups"

I used a cable modem for 2 years, and just loved it. Nearly cried when they cut me off and I had to rely on the phone company and a 56k connection. I recently upgraded the phone connection to a DSL connection, and it's nearly as fast as the cable modem...so I'm happy once again! No problems with the phones or anything here either!

Cliff why did they cut you off?

We have cable modem and love it.  No problems with our cable TV or internet. :)

Because I couldn't pay the bill. I've been in a rather shakey financial situation lately, and had to let some things fall behind....cable was the least needed item!

I wouldn't be without my cable modem.....got the business to do and gotta be on PUT.  It is so fast and I really love it.  My internet service is bundled with my TV in a package that makes it cheaper than if I had gotten another phone line. :)
