We ve purchased a 1999 Starcraft SpaceStar, and we are not picking it up from the dealer until 3/22.... do you think we should go ahead and have A/C installed before we pick it up, or have you done alright with just fans?  Tent camping was unbearable in the July heat, but I wonder if PopUps can be kept cooler?

We don t want to spend money if not necessary, but we don t want to go camping in July only to find ourselves sweaty messes in the morning!  Thanks.

my4cutiesIf it s hot/humid at night the PU won t keep you any cooler than a tent. That s my reason for getting AC; to sleep. If I intended to just camp in our favorite campground up in the Adirondacks I wouldn t bother. The altitude brings the temperature down at night and the humidity is fairly low. But since my son s in NC and the inlaws are in Lakeland, Florida it s AC for us.

my4cutiesHere in MN I think a fan is the way to go, especially since alot of time I camp without electric, so A/c wouldn t work anyway.

I don t know your weather. But every time we have camped, even in the hottest times. The nights cool down enough that a fan works just fine. Even when we went to TN we were fine.

I just use a big and cheap box fan, but I will (maybe this summer) get a fantastic fan put in my trailer.

Besides I dont spend more than ten minutes inside during the day.

my4cutiesIf you can do the AC, go for it.  We went on one trip without it and believe me by the time we went out again, we had it.  I don t care if we only use it twice a season...it s two camping trips saved by the AC and not sweltering or sweating it out trying to sleep or rest.  Sometimes it s not just the sun beating down on the popup, but it could be just plain ol  muggy out[: (]   We all sleep better and it keeps the noise of the campground out too!

my4cutiesGet the AC it s worth it. All it takes is one hot and humid week and the AC will pay for itself..

my4cutiesIf the heat bothered you in the tent it will bother you in the PU too.  If you can afford it, go with the AC.  We have PU camped for 7 seasons and had a Carrier Air V with the heat option installed last year.  We used to skip the camping in the hot, humid months, unless we were going north.  Last year we were able to camp all summer.  We used the heat option more than the air conditioner, but the few times we used the AC it was well worth it.  I would like to recommend the Carrier Air V to you again.

Turn Key

my4cutiesSounds like you answered your own question.  Fans will help a bit but not much.  If your uncomfortable in a tent, spring for the AC.  You ll be a lot happier.

my4cutiesI vote A/C.  As Mike has pointed out, camping at altitude will usually provide a cool comfortable sleep, but at lower elevations you will probably be hot humid ad uncomfortable.

Most of our dry camping is at altitude, to the point that on some trips in the summer I have to break out the blankets.  When we camp lower, I like the ability to turn on the A/C for a comfortable sleep.

Wayfarer

my4cutiesGet both!  Our first RV had both AC and FantasticFan and each served it s own purpose.  The AC cooled when we needed it; the FF provided great air circulation when that was what we needed.  If and when I can afford one I will add the FF to the PU.

my4cutiesThe answer is simple: Get both.

Some nights the fan is enough, but if you got too hot in a tent, then you ll get too hot in a PU. They can get heated up during the day and are tough to cool down at night.

Also, for beating the heat either way, investigate the bunk end covers from Popup Gizmos (they re in the PUT store at a discount for members).

my4cutiesAnother .02 cents worth, why buy both?  The AC has a fan only setting that blows plenty of air. You save $200 for the fan and don t have to cut another 14 x 14 opening in the roof. Remember they re none to strong as it is; and any opening you cut won t be reinforced like the original one is. No to mention another potential leak point.

 my4cutiesSpringer02,

I could not find the popup gizmo bunk end covers in the PUT store.  I would really like to get a pair of covers with our discount, &  I may have looked in the wrong place.   If you can point me in the right direction, I sure would appreciate it.

 Thanks!

my4cutiesYou need to buy them directly form Pop Up Gizmo s.  Here is the link to his site.  You need to give him your PUT user name and then take 10% off of the price of the item only, not the shipping.
