I got the Yakima Rack for our new Utah and it looks as if the posts are not capable of accepting lock cores. Has anyone found a way around this or am I imagining things. I d like to keep the racks attached but worry about having them walk.

 Thanks

MattHJust put one on the trailer last week, but not sure what you are asking? Come on back.
 Accepting lock cores?

MattH

MattHA typical Yakima Rack has an insert that can be fitted with a lock to keep the racks from being taken. It is a plug that when filled with the lock core allows you to secure the rack system. Yakima uses the same core system on their bike carriers(the part of the rack that actually holds the bikes on the crossbars).

It s a minor detail on the crossbars themselves. I was just curious if anyone had any info on them I do highly recommend the cores for whatever type of bike carrier you attach to the crossbars. They re not cheap at $8-10 a pop, but they can save you the cost of a new bike.

MattHDone a little research, wonder if these will do the trick. http://www.backcountrystore.com/store/search_results.html?id=Qe4Ht3tU

Did a search under locking basket

MattH

MattHThat wouldn t fit the bill. If, however, you enlarge that picture, you will see the lock that is available on all other Yakima crossbars. They just didn t include it as an optio on the Coleman OEM. I m guessing that a pair of Yakima gutter mount towers would fit in place of the unlockable towers that come with the Coleman.

I think I m going to have to check with my local bike store. Of course, that s a lot more money than I want to spend. Might have to just live with the way it is. In order to remove it now you need a special wrench and an allan key.

MattHI have the roof rack and you would have to unbolt the rack from inside the trailer to get it off.  Does your trailer have the new roof or the old roof?  I am guessing that you have the new roof I haven t seen how it is attached.

MattH

MattHI have the new style roof. There is an external track that the rack moves in. Any adjustements can be made externally using an allan key. It s a nice setup. I just wish it could be locked.

MattHI don t blame you.  There is too much tied up in the system to loose anything.  I would write to Coleman and ask if they have a locking system.

 tlhdocYo!

I am still trying to get an answer from Yakima. I am working very hard on this one. I have a new roof and the  rack/basket is held on by four large thumb screws. Would be nice to lock for in the storage area. It will come off, but a pain if you know what I mean.

You might want to look at this site to see if it might fit you needs, http://www.kryptonitelock.com/

 MattHMattH,

Well, must tell you that I have run out of ideas. Tried all my contacts and came up with nothing. How do you make out ?Did ever find anything ?

MattH

MattHThe only way to lock it is to use the Yakima towers that they sell. I think their " rail runners"  will fit in the same glides as are on top of the PU. It s a bit more costly.

I just moved my crossbars and bike racks to in front of the AC (the dealer had installed the bars towards the rear). They are a pain to get off and move. I would suspect that will discourage anyone from wanting to walk away with them.

MattHI am glad to hear the lack of locks will not be too big of a problem.  I sure with you could lock them though.
