 Suezyque,
Where can I find a good GPS for my DS for his birthday?  Thanks alot, you ARE the best![8D][8D][8D]

HersheyGirlAmazon.com has GPS.  They have a range of prices and features.  I don t know much about them or what features you are looking for, but you can check them out there.

I think you get a discount if you are a member of Geocaching.com and if you click through their site.

HersheyGirlThanks thldoc and Surfcal for the links.  Now I am overwhelmed with tooooo many choices.  Which one do I get?

Surfcal, I used to live in SF, and I loved it there.  I married a man born and raised in the bay area, thinking that I would stay there the rest of my life.  He decides he needed to get out of CA and heads east...so here we are.  I did leave my heart in SF as well a so many good friends...I cried and cried when we left.  We both worked at Kaiser SF.[8D][8D][8D]

Suezyque

HersheyGirlI have read that some Radio Shack s have one for $70, but that is completely dependant upon stock.  You might want to check there.
I will keep my eyes open though for a super deal.

 HersheyGirlHersheyGirl,

Just E-mailed you a bunch of links that may help you in your Quest.

If I can assist please give me a shout.

I m sure there will be a Very Happy Birthday Camper on the Big Day.

By the way,  when I searched out for my purchase I compared and taking into consideration not only the cost of the unit but also shipping costs I found my BEST deal at Wally World.  They even knew what the were talking about.

HersheyGirlI received a Garmin etrex Legend for Christmas.  It was just over $150 at Amazon.  It will be useful for trips where the roads are unfamiliar since the map shows you where your are at all times.  The etrex--one model down from the legend) does not have the mapping function but works well for geocaching (See www.geocaching.com for details of this great family activity) and is about $109 at Amazon and $119 at Wal-Mart.  I saw some GPS units on  ebay but did not see anything that was better priced than Amazon!

 HersheyGirlPopupcop,

You will truly like your Legend.  I ve had mine for almost a year and it s been a real trooper.  Lots of useful features and easy to use.  I use mine for Geocaching (of course) and we also hunt out old Ghost Towns in Central and N.E. Penna. and have starte mapping them out.  We also run tracks on our bike trips.

My sister liked it so much she got her Hubby one for X-mas.  She s sneaky as he is Very anti-technology and he will probably never pick it up.  He would rather get lost and have a story to tell.

 HersheyGirl,

Glad you got my e-mail.  Hope it helps.  It can be confusing making a choice but I think you are heading on the right track.  GPS, Scouting and Ham Radio.  If you think this Board is addictive.  You may never see those boys again.

HersheyGirlIf you want one he will use all the time, and come to know it as his " right arm"  (trust me..) Buy him the Garmin V.. it is a good chunk of $$ about $400 but it is amazing, portable from car to the woods, but it is the first one that really does a great job for turn to turn driving directions.. (Much like the ones in the high end cars) It is amazing! I use mine to locate 10-20 addresses a day and it never fails to get me there.. It has a computer data base to load the points you are going to or you can easily type in an address on the GPS itself.. ALSO it never gets lost and will re-calculate a new route if he gets lost.. (He will never have to stop and ask for directions again!!)  And, it has a ton of other features like " points of intrest"  ever somewhere and want to go out to eat?? Just search for a resturant by what is close.. (and a ton of other things to boot) You even search by what type of food you want... When it brings up the list of what is close, and you click on it.. it even gives you their phone ##

By far, the most amazing thing I have ever bought.. It makes the e-trex and their like look like an etch-a-scetch

Here is one for a hair over $400 (that is a good going price for it..) It comes with a great dash mount as well as all the power cables..

HersheyGirlHere is an amazing wriet up on the Garmin V --> http://gpsinformation.net/gps5/g5review.htm

HersheyGirlThank you to everyone for all the information and links to help me with this purchase.  I still haven t found the one, but I am now leaning towards the Garmin Legend, as it is more in my price range with the features that I think DS will want.  I went to Wally World yesterday and they were out of the GPS, they said that they sold out early Dec, and still have not got new stock, so they don t know what kind they will be getting.  Looks like amazon.com is the place, as they have a great selection.  Again, thanks to everyone.[8D][8D][8D]

HersheyGirlIf you re a member of Sams Club, they have the Magellan SportTrac Map for a pretty good deal after rebate. They don t show the GPS on their web site but I found one at our local store. It was $250 but had a $100 rebate. Not bad for a mapping GPS and includes their MapSend Topo CD ($100 value), case ($20) and PC interface cord ($20). You can find the gps info at: www.magellangps.com and the rebate info at: www.samsclub.com   click on the " Rebate"  tab near the top. The rebate offer expires 1/31/03. Of course, this one can t hang with FF/EMT s Garman V but it is a great value for the $$$.

 HersheyGirlHello HersheyGirl:

Sorry for the delayed response.  The bargain section isn t normally a place I go.  Your header of GPS initially caught my attention.

Anyway, SF is a great town to be in.  I ve been here since 1982 and except for a couple of years for a job stint in Washington D.C., this has been home.  Since the  89 Loma Prieta earthquake, this town has gone through an incredible metamorphosis.  The area South of Market has experienced such a dramatic change.  Much of the Financial District has remained the same, but the two blocks South of Market has a lot of new large buildings.  They ve built a brand new ballpark down in the China Basin area.  That whole area, all the way to the Wharf is now unrecognizable.  It s all developed and brand new.  The whole place is gleaming.

I m sure you ve been by in the past few years and seen some of the developments.  And if you haven t seen the new developments, I ll give you the coordinates to find them.

HersheyGirlI know that it s almost been a week, but for future reference, if you go to http://www.google.com/ and type choosing GPS, or any item that you might need information

HersheyGirlHey, thanks to all of you who posted replies to my search for a GPS for DS for his BD.  I did go with the Magellen at Sam s Club....only after going to the third one did I finally get it.  It should serve DS well and it is in my price range after the $100 rebate.  Again, thanks to all who sent links and advice to this GPS newbie.[8D][8D][8D]
