While driving down the highway coming home from Inks Lake, all of a sudden we hear a funky scraping noise coming from the pop-up.  Luckily we were able to quickly pull over.  One of our stablizers came down!  The sucker not only came down, it locked in place!!!  Imagine what a disaster that could have been if we didn t catch it quick enough.  We took a good look and everything seems to be okay.  Hope it never happens again though.

Have any of you ever had something like that happen?

CathyAnnYour Skamper must have the spring loaded / flip down stabilizers.  The BAL crank-down levelers on mine wouldn t be able to do that.  I guess maybe they weren t locked in all the way OR they became loose from going over a (pretty severe) bump in the road..... That s my guess.

CathyAnnOMG!  That could ve turned out very bad!  Thank God everything s ok. whew! [:)]

CathyAnnWow,  glad you noticed that strange sound right away.  Just think of what it would have sounded like if you had hit a bump or something!   I think you must have the same kind of stabilizers we have, and I have wondered if they could come down by themselves.  Now I know, and will tell Rick too, so that we will remember to always check them before pulling out.  Thanks for the heads up on this.

CathyAnnHave you ever greased, or oiled them? DON T!

CathyAnnOur Rockwood used to have stabilizers that were the spring load type and when I put them up I had to make sure they " locked"  into place.  However, if you have the crankdown type, be sure that when you crank them up that they are firmly up in place with the crank handle.

CathyAnnSo glad it wasn t worse than it was!  We have the old snap downs too, but I just bought 2 sets of the Olympian scissor jacks on Ebay to replace our old worn out fold out ones.  I look forward to the ease of using the crank down on any level of surface, and since I want to be able to use them myself in case husband can t come along, these seem perfect.  Hope yours stay up and in a the right position from now on-could have been a one time fluke![&:]

CathyAnnAfter seeing this message again, I thought about what you could do about it to prevent it from happening again....... You can simply drill two small holes in the frame (paint them too so they don t rust) that will allow you to put a small bungee at a point that will prevent the stabilizers from coming down unless you want them too.  I m glad you are ok, but I d do something as it could have caused problems in manuverability and could have damaged or caused an accident......

CathyAnnHey Cous .  We had an experience on our way home too.  A blowout, just looks like the tire slung the belts on us.  Sure would be the trip too that Brian didn t check the spare before we left, so we limped along on a low spare for about three miles before we found a service station with working air.

Now I have to replace the tire, and really don t like the prices I am being quoted!

I m glad nothing bad happened to your camper, and glad Brian and I both heard the blowout right away!  No damage to the wheel well or anything thank goodness.
