No, not me, Jessie James was shot in the back by one of his own men.  The man was hoping to collect the sizable reward that was being offered.[:o]

We were nearing the end of an 8-week trip around the west in the Taj MaHaul when we arrived in Cameron, Missouri, to meet PJay s brother and spend a few days.  We had never seen his son, who was then three, and had not seen him or his wife for as many years.  It was good to see them again.[:)]

It was the first time we had slept in beds (other than the pop-up) for about six weeks.  It was a nice change of pace, but we had no complaints about the Taj MaHaul s bunks.  OTOH, his home was air conditioned, which our Bayside is not!

While there, we went with them to St. Joseph, Missouri for some sightseeing.  Among the things we saw was the Pony Express Museum, comemorating the Pony Express and preserving it s history, artifacts, and documents in the town that was the eastern jumping off point of the Pony Express.  There were hands-on exhibits for the kids, and interesting tidbits for the older kids. [;)]  I bought a hat in the gift store.

From there, we went to the Jessie James house, where the famous outlaw was killed.  They had a detailed account of the shooting, and had photos and a sketch of his life.  They even pointed out where bullet fragments were later found in the wall.  They also documented the controversy that claims the person killed and buried was not Jessie James, and that the real Jessie James died in the 1950 s at the age of about 108.  (This has recently been totally refuted by DNA evidence).

The shooter never collected the reward, even though it was posted as " Dead or Alive" .  It seems the locals recognized murder when they saw it, even the murder of such an infamous outlaw.  The man was tried (which was controversial, after all, he had killed the worst outlaw the west ever knew), but he was not convicted.  The defense was that the killing of such a dangerous man was not really murder.  Even so, those offering the reward refused to pay because of the cold-blooded manner in which the shooting took place.[:o]

After that, we walked down the road a short distance to another museum (the name escapes me now) where they have a collection of fun stuff.  There is an old steam locomotive, the world s largest ball of string (over a half a ton of string), an old-fashioned soda fountain, antique dolls, old horse-drawn carriages, etc.[:)]

We finished our day at the ice cream shop next door, escaping the heat by devouring double- and triple-dip ice cream cones.[8D]

There are hundreds, perhaps even thousands, of small towns like St. Joseph that have little jewels that, while perhaps not worth a special trip, are the perfect thing for when you are just passing through.  Please take the time to tell us about your fun discoveries on the road.

Austin (who longs to be out on the road again...the snow is melting!)

Maybe the same thing will happen to Saddam, and we can be done with this.....

Thanks!  I just talked to a co-worker of mine (who is from MO) and asked her about St. Joseph and whether there was anything fun to do there!  I was thinking we might head home from Topeka by way of St. Joe.  After reading your post ~ I know we will!   Sounds like a good time (for us and the kiddos!)

I m sure that I ve run into towns like that myself ~ but nothing is coming to mind right now.  Must be because all 4 kids are home!  Who invented Spring Break anyway? [: (]  LOL   I ll be back if something magically appears!!

AustinBostonAnd you didn t let us know you were in the area?  I m hurt.  [&:]  St. Joe is a nice area, as is Weston which is a lil south of there (across the river from Ft Leavenworth).  There s a SP on the river just north of Weston which is suppose to be nice.  Glad you had a good time.
