We re thinking about taking the kids to Sturbridge Village this summer - has anyone popped-up there?  Are looking for ideas about what to do and where to camp.  I saw a website for Oak Haven Campground - it looks nice, but campground websites don t always reflect reality.  Has anyone camped there?

GaryWT

MDCamperJust do not stay at Yogi Jellystone.  The one you mentioned is probably nice, the other one out there someplace this is nice is Pine Acres.

MDCamperIf you don t need hook-up s, then Wells State Park is an outstanding campground! I stayed in site #29 last year, absolutely huge campsite. Site #30 was nice too, as are many others...

MDCamperI think there is a KOA near Sturbridge also.  Pine Acres is also a very nice family campground (www.pineacresresort.com)   We stayed there with a bunch of families and had a nice time.  They have a lakeside beach, mini golf, etc.  Sturbridge Village is a lot of fun.  We went all the way to Williamsburg with the kids and hadn t even thought of Sturbridge which is only about an hour and a half away...honestly we weren t that thrilled with Williamsburg, it s beautiful but the kids didn t get many opportunities to speak with the " townsfolk" .  We went to Sturbridge Village last summer and had a great time!  It seems every home, village, store you walked into there was someone there to talk to you (in character) and demonstrate the way of life.  It was very enjoyable.  We spent two days there and also had a nice dinner at the Old Sturbridge Inn (hope that s the right name) it s on the property.  The dinner included having historical characters play music and read stories.  It was a nice end to our visit.  Your kids will have a great time, it s very hands on there and just a beautiful place to visit.

MDCamperPine Acres in Oakham, MA is good if you like planned activities, hook-ups etc. We found it to be a little too busy although would have been fun if the grandchildren had been with us. Wells State park fits our style better. It s also a LOT closer to Sturbridge

MDCamperThanks to everyone for the information - we ll definitely put Sturbridge on our list of things to do.  I agree that Williamsburg isn t very interactive - we ve been there many times, as it s close to our home.  If anyone is planning on going to the area, one historical place that I think is better than Williamsburg (smaller, more informal, interactive, kid-friendly) is the Jamestown settlement.  The kids got to wear 17th century body armour, pretend drill at the fort, visit an Indian settlement and other fun stuff.

 MDCamperHi,

I sent you the Spring Newsletter from Old Sturbridge Village in your email.  We love it, but we ve never camped there (there s a decent motel right outside the front gate).

Acts 2:38 girl

MDCamperWe live about 20 minutes away from OSV, and had a membership there last year!  It is great, and they give you the second day for free.  This is a really nice feature because the " village"  is divided in town and country sections.  This gives you the chance to visit each section at a slow pace, although it can be done in one day a little quicker.  Our kids were 2, 3, and 6 when we visited and I definatly recommend a wagon or something because there is a lot of walking.  The gift shops are great, my sons love checking out everything!  The one inside the village is best for children (not a lot to break [&:]) and the one outside the enterance is great for adults and has a FANTASTIC book store towards the back!  [:)]
I definatly recommend Wells State Park.  Although there is no water/electric the sites are the biggest I ve ever seen at any campground, so it s worth it just to have the privacy.  The sites around the lake front are smaller, but still big compared to others.  All vehicles travel slowly on the road, so there is no fear of kids riding on bikes, walking, etc.
Have a great time, and if you want, let us know when your in town and maybe we can get together!  [:D]

Acts 2:38 girlI agree with MDCamper about Jamestown.  We were disappointed with Colonial Williamsburg, but our kids did have their best time at Jamestown.  It was very informative and interactive.  MDCamper if you come out this way, along with Sturbridge Village head down to Plymouth, MA if you can and check out Plimouth Plantation and the Mayflower.  Guaranteed you ll enjoy it, if you liked Jamstown!

MDCamper

MDCamperWe went to Plimoth Plantation 3 years ago and loved it.  My DD was 5 years old and spent most of her time chasing the chickens.  The poor things probably didn t lay eggs for days afterwards.  My DS met a soldier on the Mayflower who both appalled and fascinated him with the explanation of how the sun revolved around the earth and that all navagation was based on this knowledge (no wonder they got lost).  I ve never been to such a place that brought history alive - it turned my DS into a real history buff.  If Sturbridge Village is half as good, we re in for a treat.  We were thinking about stopping at Sturbridge for a few days on our way to Bar Harbor.  Since the trip is in mid-July, hook-ups are a must (love that A/C), so we ll check out Pine Acres.

MDCamperYou know, we live about an hour away from Sturbridge Village and have never been there. The kids went with the school but the DH and I have not. So if any of you are going let me know when and maybe we can join you for a weekend. We did small scale farming and so I love that stuff.

Gee, I wish I couldn t understand that comment...

We have visited forts, and historic landmarks all over the US, Canada, and Europe.  We live 70 miles from DC, I toured it 2 years ago for the first time.  I have never been to Fort McHenry (70 miles from us in Baltimore).

MDCamper

MDCamperWe ll be at Sturbridge 7/11(pm) and 7/12 - departing for Maine 7/13.  If anyone wants to join us, we d be happy for the company.

Camperroo

MDCamperglad you ll be leaving for Maine on a Sunday because otherwise Saturdays can be a nightmare heading north on 95...Saturday s are changeover time for summer vacationers.  We know if we aren t on the road by 2:30 p.m. on Friday s we usually wait till well after dinnertime instead.  Otherwise we d just spend the whole time in traffic!!  Where in ME are you heading!

Gone-Camping

MDCamperYep, I used to live up that way. Going to Maine on Sunday should have you moving in the opposite direction of all the traffic, and there will be plenty of that heading back south out of Maine as the weekenders will be heading home...

Just plan your trip north so that your well past NYC long before rush hour!!! I would plan to past Hartford before Rush hour if possible.... After your past
Hartford, there will be no more cities, and Sturbridge is right inside the Mass
 state line....
