Does anyone routinely take a chainsaw with them when they camp?

Just came back from my first trip this year in a national forest. There was plently of wood cut down by the Forest Service for fire breaks, but they were large logs!!![:@][:@][:@]

I made a run into the nearest town and bought a chainsaw that saved the trip...It was below freezing a couple of nights and snowed on Sat. night...It was still a great trip due to a good supply of firewood...[8D][8D][8D]

I don t think I ll ever go out again without one...

raven339You re lucky, up here a ranger hears a chainsaw fire up and they slap you with a ticket and if they see any cut standing wood say goodbye to the saw plus a ticket. Of course national forest area are rare around here, most everything is state and the they are strict conservationists. Plus most campgrounds frown on using chainsaws inside the camppgrounds due to the number of children and childlike adults around.

raven339Was anyone else camping near you?  I am glad I wasn t.

raven339I m with those who say no.

To me, the sound of a chain saw is like the sound of a crying baby, only louder.

Austin (who has only once heard a chain saw going in a campground...and that by the staff)

Jeffrey

 raven339I can see it now.............

Before this thread is over we will have something else to add to the rule books!
Add " chainsaws"  to the list of " do not discuss" [&:]

I ve never camped anyplace where the use of one would make sense, and probably not legal either. Plus I don t bring my own supply of firewood, and the wood I do buy is all cut.

Except for the time, I camped on my brothers lot, and helped him clear a place to build his house.[:)]  Then we had them buzzing.

I will probably need to bring one this summer though, but that s another story.[;)]

Raven, I have taken one, but it was before we got the Coleman. We used to pull a flat trailer, with all the gear on it. We would go up seven or eight miles into the Nat. Forest. and just find a spot, beside the dirt road to camp. There was a lot of down trees all over. We would drag down a big one, saw it up and split it. There wouldn t be another camper for miles, literally. For everyone back east, this is perfectly legal. You can saw up downed dead trees.

The Forest Ranger would stop and visit us, and stay for a cup of coffee. He even helped me set up some targets, that I was using at the time. It s nothing to hear " shots"  while camping in this area. Off road vehicles are the norm.

But after getting the Coleman, I can t go there anymore. The road would shake the camper apart!

It was a fun area to go to, the fees where just right $0, Nothing. Of course you didn t have any water, or bathrooms. Not even a metal fire ring. You made one out of rocks, or used one someone else had made. That was really " Dry Camping" .

Now I m more civilized, I pay to go to the bathroom.

LOL - I keep picturing one of those dime meters on the door of a port a pot out in the middle of a thick forest!

That sounds pretty wonderful.  If I can ever convince DH to give up civilization and head out to National forests/parks in the West, I ll make sure we bring along chainsaw - I can t imagine him swinging an ax as much as would be needed to get the firewood down to size![;)]

Turn Key

raven339Camp mostly in SP s and you can t do that in Texas.

missteri

raven339I wouldn t take one in a campground, but if you re staying where there is no one else around, then why not?

ForestCreature

raven339YES! we take along a chain saw if we are going to be out for more than a couple of nights. We take along wood , but on the longer trips it is easier to go down a small backroad and cut what we need.

Camping in the State Forests, it s legal to cut your own wood from downed trees here in MI. It is very rare that we cut the wood on our sight. We cut to size on the back roads and throw it in the van. There are even times we load up to take some home for the next trip[:o]

I do all my camping in undeveloped sites in national forests and on BLM land. Only once in the last 30 years or so have I stayed in a developed campsite...[:)][:)][:)]  So I am a dry camper...Err...As long as we re not talking about booze...[8D][8D][8D]

So all you folks out there, rest assured, the only time there s anyone within earshot of me is during hunting season...

BTW, we always have guns with us and regularly partake of some target practice...We try not to shoot in the direction of people...[;)][;)][;)]

Mtn, I frequently travel primitive Forest Service & BLM  roads with my Westlake, (One of the reasons I had it lifted), and it is remarkably durable!!!  It s also the reason I decided to take my bathroom with me...I like a somewhat civilized touch.

So if you d like to get back to that primative type of camping...It s still possible...With a Porta-Potty, some civilization is possible...[:D][:D][:D]

raven339I tried to go up where we used to, but I broke the plastic supports of all the drawers. I guess I could " beef"  em up a little. [;)]

raven339

raven339So far I haven t had that problem...I have torn up the rear bumper and the bracket holding the water tank though, (Before I had it lifted)...

Guys traveling behind me have said the suspension seems very robust, as it appears to bounce clear of most obstacles in it s path...And I ve never damaged the suspension bar between the wheel spindles.

 So it goes...
